Advanced Geomatics (ADG) Internship
Colorado Springs Utilities is hiring a summer intern for the Advanced Geomatics section (ADG). This internship will provide a valuable opportunity for a motivated individual to gain hands-on experience in land surveying, supporting our organization's mission to serve the customers of Colorado Springs effectively.
*This is a summer only internship from May 26th through August 8th/14th depending on school schedule
The intern will have the chance to learn about the upcoming 2022 State Plane Coordinate System (SPCS2022) and National Spatial Reference System (NSRS), Public Land Survey System (PLSS), gain field experience utilizing GNSS technology, and experience with our GIS system. This experience will be instrumental in helping the intern understand the fundamentals of land surveying and how they apply in both the office and the field as well as gain hands-on field experience.
Focus of the ADG section:
Land Surveying services: ADG provides Land Surveying services throughout Colorado Springs Utilities in support of engineering, construction, resource management, etc. This includes topography surveys, construction staking, tree surveys, 3D modeling, bathymetric surveys, and dam monitoring
GIS Editing: ADG manages the Landbase portion of the Colorado Springs Utilities GIS system covering subdivisions, lots, addressing, easements, and more.
UAS Program: ADG is responsible for the Colorado Springs Utilities drone program, used to perform land survey work and infrastructure inspections
Skills the intern will learn:
The basics of the PLSS system. How it was created, what are its components, why it matters today, and how we're integrating information from it into our GIS and surveying systems
Land Surveying fieldwork: Learn the basics of how work is prepped for the field, how to operate GNSS equipment to locate PLSS corners and property corners, and how to post-process that data back in the office
Land Surveying and GIS: Learn how data gathered in the field is integrated into the GIS in order to create a more accurate representation of our city and surrounding area
We believe that this internship will not only benefit the intern by providing them with practical experience and professional growth but also contribute to our ongoing efforts to update Colorado Springs Utilities to the new coordinate system.
