This announcement will be used to fill multiple positions at Itasca State Park.
Established in 1891, Itasca is the oldest state park in Minnesota and one of the first state parks in the country. Home to the Headwaters of the Mississippi River, the park is one of the top tourism attractions in the Upper Midwest. Itasca State Park operates 7 days a week with visitors on-site 24 hours a day year-round.
The DNR is currently seeking multiple part-time seasonal Security Guards at Itasca State Park to provide emergency services, security, and protection for the resources and facilities, and to help ensure the park visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience. Hours of work will vary based on the season. Normal anticipated season dates are from mid-April through beginning of September. Work hours vary, and workdays include evenings, holidays, and weekends.
Within the first six (6) months of employment, successful applicants must complete Security Ranger training, Park Ranger Basic training, and Emergency Medical Responder training.
Responsibilities include:
Patrol buildings and grounds by foot or vehicle to deter unlawful or other inappropriate activity by making assigned rounds in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures; and monitoring, investigating, and/or reporting unusual or suspicious conditions or incidents.
Secure facilities and regulate movement in and out of assigned buildings and grounds to ensure admittance of only authorized persons, recording and verifying information as directed, remaining knowledgeable of acceptable on-site activity, locking/unlocking doors and windows, and monitoring alarm systems.
Provide information to the public, students, and/or other state employees on applicable rules and regulations, office and facility locations, available programs, and related issues.
Protect quality of resources, including public waters within the park, through inspection of materials and equipment. Provide instruction and ensure understanding of issues related to invasive species.
Respond to emergencies in order to protect persons and property by going to the appropriate location; assessing the situation; following prescribed instructions; applying basic knowledge of emergency medical responses including first aid, CPR, and other emergency procedures as appropriate; and requesting additional assistance when needed.
Prepare detailed incident reports and maintain log records by collecting relevant information and accurately completing routine forms.
Perform routine cleaning maintenance and operations work.
Assist with the sale of vehicle permits, nature store items, and camping/lodging registration. Maintain appropriate records on these transactions and collect user fees.
Minimum Qualifications
Current CPR and First Aid certification. Please make sure this information is included in your resume.
Knowledge of administrative rules, regulations, and procedures governing security for buildings and grounds sufficient to follow, enforce, and explain.
Knowledge of proper safety precautions and first aid techniques sufficient to deal effectively with emergency situations.
Ability to enforce regulations, reasonably but firmly.
Ability to use appropriate human relations skills when dealing with the public.
Ability to follow simple oral and written directions and react quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
Ability to provide critical communication efficiently and effectively.
Communication and writing skills sufficient to write incident reports, maintain log records accurately and consistently, and respond to a wide range of technical questions.
Organizational and interpersonal skills sufficient to work as a productive member of a team.
Conflict resolution/human relation skills sufficient to negotiate, resolve issues, read situations, and settle disputes equitably by finding common ground and cooperation.
Preferred Qualifications
First Responder (EMR) or higher certification.
Experience working as a security guard, park ranger, or law enforcement.
Knowledge of park rules, policies, facilities, and local points of interest.
Knowledge of park buildings, utilities, roads, and trails.
Additional Requirements
This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's license with a clear driving record; per DNR Fleet Policy, only those 18 years of age or older with a valid driver's license may operate equipment and vehicles on behalf of the Agency.
