The Mechanical Engineer role is integral to the design and development of custom automated systems within the Medical & Life Sciences sector. This position involves working within a collaborative team environment, leveraging engineering expertise to create innovative solutions. The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for CAD design, detailed engineering documentation, and supporting the integration of sub-systems into larger, complex machinery.
Responsibilities
Lead the design and development of custom automated equipment by applying advanced engineering principles and calculations.
Utilize CAD software to design and model sub-systems and stations, ensuring integration into larger systems is seamless and meets project specifications.
Collaborate with the controls engineering team to define automation sequences, safety devices, and other essential components to achieve customer requirements.
Conduct and document tolerance analyses to ensure positional accuracy and overall system effectiveness.
Develop and iterate concept CAD models to establish and communicate design footprints, ranges of motion, and operator interfaces.
Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure that engineering documentation and traceability align with Good Automated Manufacturing Practice requirements.
Perform risk assessments, including safety evaluations, and develop mitigation strategies for identified hazards.
Oversee the creation of engineering documentation packages, including fabrication drawings and bills of materials, ensuring all manufacturing requirements are met.
Engage in proof-of-principle testing to validate design elements, assessing risks, and ensuring viability.
Work closely with suppliers to specify, select, and source critical components, ensuring alignment with project goals and timelines.
Support procurement, assembly, debugging, and testing efforts, ensuring that all phases of the project meet established criteria.
Provide technical guidance and consultation to junior engineers and other team members, ensuring adherence to best practices and project objectives.
Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, identifying opportunities to implement new engineering methods and standards that align with business goals.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes and practices, driving innovation in design and manufacturing.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant design experience.
Proficiency in English, both spoken and written.
Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
Proficiency in 2D CAD software (AutoCAD or DraftSight preferred).
Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (SolidWorks Simulation preferred).
Experience producing engineering documentation, including multi-level bills of materials.
Familiarity with machining, manufacturing processes, and materials selection, including coatings and treatments.
General knowledge of machine design, process automation, and related technologies.
Experience in working with suppliers to specify requirements and obtain quotations.
Experience in designing pneumatic systems and interpreting pneumatic schematics.
Ability to perform various engineering calculations, including structural, kinematics, and dynamics analyses.
Familiarity with machine safety requirements and applications.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Familiarity with SolidWorks Electrical.
Familiarity with MathCAD or similar engineering tools.
Professional Engineering (PE) registration is an asset.
Familiarity with ISO 9001:2015 procedures and documentation standards.
Experience with ERP/MRP systems and project management tools like Microsoft Project or Smartsheet.
Familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) software, such as SolidWorks EPDM.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Teams and project management tools like Microsoft Project or Smartsheet.
Work Environment
The position requires working onsite, within a collaborative team environment. The role involves using various engineering technologies and software to design and develop automated systems.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Blaine, MN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $53.00/hr.
