Summary The Registered Nurse - Endoscopy provides care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures in inpatient and outpatient settings. Performs pre-procedure assessment, assists during procedures, and provides post-procedure recovery; educates patients and families; documents and reports changes; coordinates care across the continuum; collaborates with the interdisciplinary team; maintains endoscopy equipment and reprocessing standards. The RN is accountable for the nursing process when providing and/or supervising patient care. The RN delivers and manages care for patients undergoing therapeutic and diagnostic endoscopy procedures in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Maintains proficiency in maintenance, cleaning, preparation, and reprocessing of endoscopy equipment in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Recognizes changes in patient condition, initiates appropriate emergency actions, and adapts to changes in daily workflow and scheduling. May be assigned on-call duties following facility policy and response time requirements and must maintain flexibility to support bronchoscopy, GI clinic, and GI department operations. The duties of the Registered Nurse - Endoscopy include but not limited to: Provides care to patients undergoing therapeutic and diagnostic endoscopy procedures in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Assesses patients' physical and mental status prior to procedures. Performs pre-procedure assessments, assists physicians during procedures, and provides post-procedure recovery care. Educates patients and families on procedural and post-procedural care. Documents responses to interventions, findings, and reports changes in patient condition. Coordinates care across the continuum and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to support safe and effective care. Maintains proficiency in the maintenance, cleaning, preparation, and reprocessing of endoscopy equipment according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Verifies reusable medical equipment (RME), ensures proper reprocessing, and suspends use if equipment is suspected to be improperly cleaned or sterilized. Recognizes changes in patient care situations and initiates appropriate emergency actions. Adapts to changes in daily schedule and clinical workflow. May be assigned on-call duties to cover emergencies following training and in accordance with facility response time policies. Maintains flexibility in schedule and assignments to support bronchoscopy, GI clinic, and GI department operations. Functions as a charge nurse/team leader as assigned, including staffing assignments, workflow coordination, and directing activities of medical technicians. Guides staff in the application of critical thinking and process improvement to enhance patient care. Participates in training and education related to new equipment, scopes, and accessories. Analyzes available resources and identifies risk areas related to staffing, supplies, and equipment availability. Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures related to safe work practices and body mechanics. Encourages prompt reporting of incidents and unsafe or unhealthy environmental conditions. Evaluates outcomes of nursing interventions and initiates change when appropriate. Participates in committees, councils, and professional activities and shares information with team members. Cross-trains to function as GI Liaison as needed. Work Schedule: Full time, Tour of Duty, Monday to Friday 0730-1600, requires to be On Call as per organization. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program.
