The Allen School has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Adviser.
The Academic Adviser (Academic Counselor) will provide academic counseling to students interested in and majoring in Computer Science & Computer Engineering at the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. This position is a member of the highly collaborative and innovative Allen School Advising team, which has 10 full-time staff members and supports 2300 undergraduate students. 34% of our undergraduate students are women and 10% are underrepresented minority students. Additionally, 20% of our unde graduate students are Pell-eligible and 24% of students will be the first in their family to attain a four-year degree.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Advising & Student Services (85%)
Provide academic counseling to students both considering, applying to, and majoring in Computer Science and Computer Engineering within the Allen School general academic advising
Manage caseload of current computer science & engineering students for satisfactory progress and questions about the competitive admissions process school, and answer
Advise prospective students on pre-major courses, requirements to apply to the
Support Allen School students by developing relevant programming and activities
Participate in the University's New Student Orientation program for first year and transfer students only courses
Manage the non-major enrollment petition process for non-major students interested in majors-
Lead the monthly Current UW admissions information sessions
Lead New Majors Orientation for current UW admits
Counsel and assist students experiencing academic difficulty or personal crises regarding options and resources.
Refer students as necessary to appropriate UW or community resources.
Interpret University and School policies and regulations to students, faculty, and staff
Assist in screening applicants and participate in admissions committee decisions
Advise and redirect students denied admission to the school
Communicate with students via email, phone, virtual meetings and in person
These responsibilities may change consistent with business needs.
Administrative Duties (15%)
Ensure that paper and electronic documents pertinent to the Allen School undergraduate programs (including brochures, web material, online forms, etc.) are kept up to date
Keep informed of University, College of Arts & Sciences, and College of Engineering policies
Respond to faculty/staff inquiries regarding undergraduate programs
Maintain advising database and school website
Respond to high volume of student inquiries via phone, email, and drop-in during peak periods
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of advising, student counseling or teaching experience, or equivalent experience/education
Additional Requirements
Excellent organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize work, and manage heavy workloads with frequent interruptions
Experience working with diverse students and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion programming
Collaborative teammate with strong interpersonal skills including an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues in the Allen School and across the university
Has excellent oral and written communication skills for professional workplace settings, including presentation and public speaking experience
Desired Qualifications
Familiarity with University student related policies and procedures
Experience with University student database systems
Experience authoring web pages using HTML
Conditions of Employment
This position may be required to work an irregular work week (including evenings and weekends) to organize and participate in events
Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
Pay Range Minimum:
$66,000.00 annual
Pay Range Maximum:
$68,184.00 annual
