Description of Job
Colorado Correctional Industries (CCi) is a cash funded, self supporting division of the Colorado Department of Corrections. This position may be eliminated at any time if funding is discontinued. The Department may be able to assist with transferring you to a position that is either comparable or below the classification that you were hired for, but if there is not a vacant position it may result in termination of employment. If the position is eliminated it may require you to relocate to another correctional facility or geographical location based on the need of the CDOC. Also, you must meet minimum qualifications for any vacant positions in order to be considered for a transfer. CCi provides services to many government and non profit organizations with an emphasis on excellent customer service.
This position is a Canine Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I). This position ensures the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates. This position prepares inmates for community re-entry by promoting the Colorado Department of Corrections Mission, Vision and Values while adhering to a high level of integrity and commitment.
Safety and Security - This position maintains safety and security of facility; through clear and accurate communication. The position trains and guides staff and inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting searches; monitors workplace environment and offender behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy and limits offender access to restricted areas; position performs offender counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting.
Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment.
Inmate Accountability - The position ensures offender workers are trained in work area and ensures timely completion of tasks. Ensures offender evaluations are completed, tracks and calculates offender hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances according to agency policy; reduces offender idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community re-entry. Position holds inmates accountable for attendance and utilizes PCDCIS Chronological Entry to report/track both positive and negative behavior.
Operations - This position ensures the safe, secure, efficient, compliant and cost effective execution of assigned tasks and projects by performing "hands on" instructional work alongside staff and offender crew.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Delivers the program to adult inmates and contributes to the safety and security of the facility through effective inmate management. Promotes the overall success of Correctional Industries mission of operating as a cash funded entity while providing training and work opportunities to offenders;
Oversee instruction of inmate workers involved in canine behavior modification training program. Ensure the use of proper training methods;
Interact with housing staff to resolve issues hampering the functioning of the program at the facility;
Ensure existence and maintenance of all appropriate records both current and historical;
Provides essential commercial/professional knowledge of the canine industry for the purpose of canine behavior modification training and transportation of dogs;
Supervision of veterinary care, instruction of health care, maintenance of dog and veterinary records;
Locate and acquire prospective dogs suitable for companion, assistance, detection, search and rescue, therapy or any other specialty work currently offered or requested in the program;
Market trained dogs to consumers;
Position implements preventative maintenance programs for the canine operation;
Schedule work assignments and coordinate training schedules, supervision of offenders;
Maintain proper tool control procedures;
Enforce DOC Administrative Regulations, Code of Penal Discipline (COPD), Operational Memoranda, Post Orders and comply with American Correctional Association (ACA) standards.
Ensures the safety and security of the public, facility staff and offenders by evaluating work conditions; instructing staff and offenders in proper safety methods;
Provides custody, surveillance, supervisory, transport, shakedown and count duties; ensures proper key, tool, equipment and chemical control; ensures compliance of all policy/procedural guidelines; enforces safety/security procedures by conducting inspections, work site searches and monitoring the work environment.

Minimum Qualifications:
Four (4) years of work experience in commercial/professional experience in the canine industry, to include behavior modification training, canine management and nutrition, and canine health care. Your experience must beclearly described within thework experience section of your application to be counted toward the minimum qualifications.Experience must be described in detail on your application to receive credit. A ny work experience less than full time will be prorated.

Applicant may meet the four (4) year requirement experience with a combination of work experience as follows:
A minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with (2) years of **correctional experience.
** Correctional experience must be security related duties where primary responsibilities throughout a shift, include monitoring and controlling inmate movement throughout their daily schedules, discovering and preventing contraband and responding to emergencies; ensuring proper key/tool/chemical/equipment control, use, storage and accountability; advising inmates in matters concerning work, programs, appropriate behavior and decision making in order to prepare them for successful community re-entry.
Substitutions:
Sixty (60) semester hours in the fields of Canine Science or Animal Husbandry, may substitute for two (2) years experience in canine science/husbandry. Education must be from an accredited college or university.If you are using education as a substitution, you must attach transcripts showing the degree and date awarded. ** You must submit a copy of your unofficial transcripts with your name, college name, degree and date conferred in order to receive credit.

Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension , relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics

TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;
Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant's background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.
The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol.
