The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.Position SummaryReporting to the Director of Academic Administration and Finance, the incumbent coordinates the department's course scheduling and registration processes and provides administrative support to the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the department's undergraduate programs and students.The Department of Political Science at Columbia University was founded in 1880 and was the first of its kind in the country. Today, it is one of the largest departments in the university, serving one of the largest undergraduate majors on campus and annually attracting an elite group of graduate students. Its faculty includes leaders and prizewinners in every subfield in the discipline. Its graduates are leaders in global and domestic private and public sector organizations and professors in world-class colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad. Responsibilities Populate, proofread, and track the department's entries in the university's course management system. Liaise with colleagues in the registrar's office to ensure that published course lists are accurate, classes are scheduled correctly, and appropriate classrooms are secured for all courses. Prepare approval requests for new courses. Proofread the department's sections of the school Bulletins. Update curriculum information on the department's website, including course schedules, syllabi, registration instructions, and related details. Assist with the coordination of part-time teaching appointments, selecting appropriate contract letter templates, and preparing drafts in a timely manner. Liaise with centers, institutes, and programs on whose behalf the department appoints part-time faculty and track and report to the DAAF and Business Manager key details of such appointments. Orient faculty to university and school academic policies, processes, and tools related to course management, registration, and course scheduling. Assist faculty in the use of CourseWorks, wait lists, program change, and grade change tools and processes. Assist the DAAF and faculty officers in improving the department's management of courses and curricula. Uses Course Management, Student Desktop Reports, CourseWorks, and other university data sources to support the DAAF and faculty in curriculum analysis and academic planning efforts, collecting, proofreading, and formatting data related to course offerings, enrollments, and faculty teaching records as requested. Assist in the course evaluation process for the department, supporting faculty and teaching assistants as needed in the use of the course evaluation tool. Serve as the primary source of administrative support for the Director of Undergraduate Studies and undergraduate students. Maintains confidential records of undergraduate majors and concentrators, tracking transfer credit and program arrangements approved by the DUS. Carry out certification of majors and concentrations, consulting with the DAAF and DUS as needed. Coordinate applications to the Honors Seminar, prize, and honors selection processes. Publicize and explain program requirements, administrative policies, and procedures to students and faculty, ensuring that all related forms and department publications are accurate and up to date. * Plan and coordinate special events for undergraduates.
