Position Summary
The Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, development and integration of all hardware drawings and software components as required to produce, complete, and fully functional building automation systems for assigned projects.
Position Details
Hardware Design:
Reviews plans, specifications and sales proposals for assigned projects and prepare engineering plans.
Generates Visio control drawings and project submittal documents as required on assigned projects.
Creates communication network riser diagrams based on building layouts, integrated/controlled equipment, system functionality, enterprise networks and communication protocols.
Creates sequence of operations for different systems/equipment on assigned projects.
Selects products, controllers and end devices as needed to perform required control sequences.
Understands and clearly illustrates wiring details for selected end devices on assigned project.
Generates Valve Schedule, Damper schedule, Points List, and Checkout Sheets, etc. as required on assigned project.
Attends meetings with owner, design engineer, and other parties as required on assigned projects.
Provides Valued Engineering ideas to the team as required on assigned projects.
During the course of the contract and at the end of the job, updates hardware design packages based on changing project conditions.
Software Design:
Works closely with the controls programmer to select the appropriate software package on assigned projects.
Works closely with controls programmer to select the appropriate server and workstations for assigned projects.
Supports the controls programmer to generates the whole database as required on assigned projects.
System Integration:
Works closely with controls programmer to select the appropriate products to integrate with multi-vendor HVAC control systems and electrical systems, including BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks etc. integration and other functional requirements for complete system integration.
Performance Quality:
Performs all work in accordance with contract documents and applicable company standards.
Performs work to meet project schedules and to facilitate others to meet project schedules.
Develops procedures and check lists for the execution of specific engineering tasks to maintain consistency and completeness of the work.
Project Closeout:
Creates Operations and Maintenance Manuals.
Creates As-Built controls drawing set.
Prepares all training materials for customer.
Communications:
Keeps manager informed of questions, progress, RFI needs, non-standard product requirements, discrepancies in contract documents and other issues impacting design and schedules.
Initiates follow up action to secure needed responses in a timely manner.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Documentation, Submittals & As-Builts Responsibilities:
Maintains project as-builts and job records on server.
Accumulates data from job site, makes modifications to database design work as directed and prepares final hardware/software packages and customer turnover documentation.
Standards & Procedures:
Applies and maintains company standards and tools.
Recommends improvements in standards, tools and processes.
Documents new design elements for possible adoption as company standard.
Develops and utilizes project task execution checklists.
Support & Coordination:
Attends job turnover meetings.
Supports and helps develop co-workers as opportunities arise.
Assists project engineers on specific issues and performs other tasks requested by management.
Coordinates design work with controls programmers and other controls engineers assigned to project.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, engineering technology, or a related field.
1 to 3 years of experience in DDC controls or building automation design.
Ability to read and interpret technical documentation including sequence of operations, technical product literature, programming manuals and specifications.
Strong knowledge of the latest versions of AutoCAD and MS Visio.
Knowledge of building mechanical and electrical equipment functions and use, HVAC systems controls applications, hardware and software products.
Knowledge of commonly used networks and network topologies.
Familiar with NEC code for Class 2 wiring.
Ability to function independently from daily supervision.
Ability to travel to jobsites to assist in the work and further understanding of control system applications.

Required Skills
Required Experience
