Job Summary
BASIC SUMMARY:
The Summer Intern is responsible for providing high-quality daily care and husbandry to research animals while maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organized vivarium environment. This role ensures the well-being of all animals, supports regulatory compliance, and contributes to the overall operation and upkeep of the facility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Handle, restrain, and provide care for all species of animals at the site.
Observe animals for general health and overall well being.
Clean primary enclosure and enclosure area for animals.
Sanitize cages, enrichment devices and other related equipment.
Measure and distribute feed to animals in accordance with established procedures.
Provide environmental enrichment.
Inspect feeding and watering devices for proper function.
Perform all tasks in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice Regulations (GLPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Review documentation of functions performed as part of quality control requirements.
Perform quarantine & isolation procedures as they relate to husbandry tasks.
Perform duties associated with the transportation, receipt, transfer and distribution of animals as assigned.
Perform cagewash duties as assigned.
Collect laboratory data and independently use equipment related to the collection of data.
May perform basic veterinary technical and husbandry tasks with guidance, including the following:
o Administration of various therapeutic measures by IV, IM, SQ, topical, oral routes, etc.
o Bandage/wrapping techniques.
o Nail/hoof/teeth clipping/trimming.
o Venipuncture techniques.
o Vaginal swabs.
o Proficient animal restraint techniques.
o Monitor critical care animals (i.e., place IVs, monitor fluids, etc.).
Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Position is open to anyone, regardless of age, who meets the educational and experience requirements as posted.
Must be authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.
The pay for this position is $17 per hour.
Job Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Must be enrolled in a degree program
Other: Ability to handle common laboratory animal species. Basic knowledge of GLP regulations preferred. Ability to work on assignments that are semi-routine in nature in which ability to recognize deviation from accepted practice is required. Ability to receive and understand general instructions on routine work and detailed instructions on new assignments.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Employees must be able to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold heavy objects up to and including 50 pounds; this includes work materials, equipment, and/or animals.
Must be able to perform procedures, which require, talking, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods of time, entering data into a computer, using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing safety equipment (PPE) according to OSHA regulations and company standards.
Must be able to frequently firmly hold species while utilizing fine motor skills.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Works in a research environment, which requires use of sharp objects, working around mechanical parts, working with or near known or unknown toxic or caustic chemicals and/or biological hazards, exposure to fumes and airborne particles.
The employee regularly works with live animals with risk of exposure to dander, allergens, zoonotic disease, and biohazards.
The noise level in the work environment ranges from low to high depending upon the species housed.
