Description of Job
Taxpayer Service Division
The Taxation Division (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE30JDBTSJo) promotes voluntary compliance with all tax laws through information, education, assistance and customer service. A Tax Examiner reviews tax returns for accuracy and completeness, ensures the tax return can be processed as filed, resolves errors and contacts taxpayers to obtain any missing information. Furthermore, Tax Examiners can be responsible for analyzing accounting files, issuing refunds or bills, calculating penalty and interest, collecting delinquent taxes, handling taxpayer complaints, adjusting for discrepancies and working with other taxing authorities such as the Internal Revenue Service, local municipalities or agencies in another state.
What We Do
The Distribution Accounting unit works with various business tax @types including sales, use, retailer's use, county lodging, local marketing, and wage withholding. The unit is responsible for resolving upfront return errors and out-of-balance credit transactions on accounts. Examiners review account registration, tax returns, and payments to determine the accuracy of the filings and eliminate the errors. Examiners review the return and payment(s) along with other account information, tax policy, and/or law to resolve outstanding credit balances. Examiners in this unit also respond to web messages and on occasion provide assistance to the Customer Contact groups. The unit analyzes historical sales distributions comparing revenue for the current period to past revenue periods and analyzes revenue with negative balances for state, local, and special district jurisdictions to identify and resolve filing errors that may have caused revenue irregularities. The unit works with the top sales and use tax filers to ensure returns and payments are made timely and that errors are resolved before the revenue period closes.
The goal of the unit is to complete all work items and resolve account irregularities by the monthly cut-off date for state, local and special district distributions. Returns with significant tax amounts that are not posted by the cut-off date could have a severe impact on a jurisdiction's tax distribution.
