Lutz Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. The incumbent inspects and makes minor and/or major repairs on all classes of Healthcare System property that is electrically or mechanically operated. This includes (but not limited to) preventive maintenance inspections (PMI's) and miscellaneous repairs to kitchen and food service equipment, office equipment, ward equipment, certain technical medical and laboratory equipment, etc. The incumbent is subject to recall for emergency repairs during non-administrative hours. Duties include but are not limited to: Possess the knowledge of the makeup and operation of a variety of equipment and controls. Skilled in use of tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, hydrostatic pumps, and meters as well as other test equipment. Knowledge of how various supply, disposal, and utility systems and equipment (such as water, oxygen, vacuum and gas systems) are installed and operated. Able to repair and modify various systems and equipment such as routing slope, openings, and level of water, steam, or gas lines and arrangement of valves, pumps, etc., on blueprint, building plans, and schematics. Use shop mathematics and contrive angles, arcs, circles, etc. Skilled in accepted trade methods and techniques, such as equipment seating and installing combinations of couplings, unions, etc. Required to perform welding tasks using a variety of welding methods. If he/she does not possess adequate knowledge in this area, he/she must continue education at the expense of the Healthcare System. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The position requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. Strenuous physical exertion may be required when handling heavy/bulky materials such as sheets of plywood, and other building/ construction materials. Standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and rooftops and working in tiring and uncomfortable or awkward positions is required. May use portable power tools for extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions. Lifting and moving materials weighting up to 50 pounds; with assistance may lift/move heavier items. When working in shop areas, the incumbent may be exposed to moderate or high noise from machinery, sawdust, glue fumes, and hazards related to power equipment. When working outdoors, the incumbent may be exposed to typical, weather conditions, subject to heat in summer and cold in winter. Will encounter hazards associated with working around/on scaffolding and ladders, also may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics that are typically dusty and dirty. May be subject to bumps, scrapes and bruises associated with typical trades work. While using acetylene torches, blazing torches, and soldering irons, the incumbent must be required safety precautions to avoid burns, must use personal protective equipment as prescribed by federal standards. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
