The Operations Manager oversees all production and maintenance functions to ensure efficient and profitable manufacturing operations. Will prepare and control departmental budgets, provide leadership in safety, housekeeping, quality and improving cost reduction.
Contributes to the accuracy and effectiveness of the planning and goal setting process by developing, recommending, implementing and achieving operational plans, goals, budgets, and capital requirements.
This position will also help develop floor supervision, promote positive labor relations and provide communication feedback to all levels of the organization. The position will report to and work closely with the Plant Manager in strategic and capital expenditures planning.
The Operations Manager provides leadership in assuring employee physical wellbeing and safety by the developments, promotion and enforcement of an uncompromising safety attitude in supervision and production employees, good safety practices measured by a safety record that exceeds and leads the industry.
Directs the manufacturing activities of all products including machines, spare parts, buildings & grounds and repair activities to meet customer schedule commitments within quality and cost objectives.
In concert with Human Resources, develops and implements on-going skills assessment and training efforts both on and off the job to constantly upgrade the skill level of supervised employees.
Participates in acquiring talent for key manufacturing positions and assist in their development. Measurement of success includes the measurement of shipment on-time performance, direct labor productivity, world-class quality levels and leading-edge product cycle times. Select, train, develop, evaluate and motivate an effective team of Managers and Supervisors, continuously works to upgrade the skill level.
Maintains continuous dialogue and communication with the Plant Manager as needed to keep him apprised of the status of safety, quality, production, schedules, loads, problems and opportunities available to maximize efficient operations and to enhance the overall operations of the company manufacturing operations.
Maintains open communications with personnel from all functions to ensure that essential information is disseminated to insure accomplishment of business objectives and customer satisfaction.
Manage, direct, plan and coordinate (through Manufacturing Managers and Production Supervisors) the manufacturing activities of nine shingle production lines in order to meet plant objectives, annual profit plan and monthly forecast.
Determine effect of production load changes on plant operations. Take action(s) to adjust capacities (labor and/or equipment) to meet new production requirements.
Review plant-operating practices ensuring that safety, production and quality standards are enhanced.
Assure appropriate working climate by maintaining proper discipline, morale and employee relations.
Participate in planning and decision making in matters concerning financial and operational problems, inventory control, plant policy, facility/maintenance issues and staffing.
Support the development and drive implementation of new manufacturing methods, equipment, material planning, quality improvement, and Lean and Six Sigma methods.
Report all EH&S incidents - lnjuries/Recordables, Near Misses, First Aid, Environmental and Property/Equipment Damage to determine root cause and corrective actions.
Ensure adherence to Waste Management and Recycling responsibilities.
Attend all plant safety meetings including Central EHS - participating members of a plant EH&S Team.
Conduct weekly SMAT Audits or any other requirements as requested by Manager.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifiications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering.
Six to eight years of manufacturing experience in management capacity including prior first line shop supervisor as well as experience in at least two different manufacturing support functions such as Production Control or Quality Assurance.
Strong working knowledge of product structure, manufacturing processes as well as quality standards and modern manufacturing technologies and techniques such as TPM including autonomous maintenance, professional maintenance and early equipment management, quality and process control including Statistical Process Control (SPC), 5S, standardized work and other Lean principles.
Proficiency in Six Sigma, TPM and Lean Manufacturing concepts.
Strong human relations skills to effectively interface with and engage the skills and talents of employees to improve business performance.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Strong written and oral communication skills.
