Nature of Work
Performs the inspection, maintenance, repair and cleaning of airport vehicles, equipment, buildings, navigational aids, grounds, pavements and other airport infrastructure.
Environmental Factors Position functions approximately eighty-five (85) percent outdoors in all weather conditions. Exposure to machinery and vehicle noise, odors, blowing dust and sand and moving aircraft and vehicles. A safety shoe allowance and required safety equipment is provided.
Physical FactorsPosition requires heavy physical work involving lifting up to fifty (50) pounds; climbing towers and ladders up to fifty (50) feet above the ground; Also includes balancing, bending, crouching and kneeling.
Work Situation Factors Position requires on-call duty on a rotating basis; occasional extended work hours beyond the normal workday and weekends during public events and construction projects; multiple tasks which require prioritization of time, responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

Duties and Responsibilities
Inspects, maintains and operates vehicles and light and/or heavy equipment to maintain airport pavements and grounds.
Inspects, maintains and operates power tools and equipment in the maintenance, repair and modification of buildings, grounds, fencing, pavements, lighting, drainage systems, airfield communication, navigational and weather equipment, dirt roads, signage and other infrastructure.
Performs building inspection, maintenance, cleaning and janitorial duties in buildings, restrooms, parking lots, road right-of-way and outdoor facilities; performs safety and security inspections in and around aircraft ramps, runways, taxiways and related areas.
Provides safety-observer services and assistance to other City employees and/or contract workers operating within the aircraft operating area; sets up and takes down barricades, fencing and other safety items.
Monitors airport use and condition; advises Airport Operations Manager, other staff members, pilots, FAA and other users of airport conditions; report infractions of FAA, airport and City rules and regulations to Airport Operations Manager.
On a rotating basis, responds to after-hours calls to repair, arrange for repair or close affected portions of the airport infrastructure, including runways, taxiways, navigational and communications equipment.
Responds to aircraft accidents by deploying pre-positioned crash-rescue equipment; assists Fire Department as requested; provides first aid and otherwise assists accident victims.
Maintains supplies of airfield lighting and navigational aids.
Minimum Qualifications
Equivalent to a High school diploma AND two (2) years of experience in facilities maintenance, light equipment operation, general construction or directly related experience. Experience in airport facilities maintenance is desirable. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
Valid driver's license required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:Airport facilities maintenance operations; radio terminology in accordance with FAA requirements; principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules, and regulations related to the operations and functions of the position and services provided; current principles of record keeping and records management; principles and practices of effective research methods and data analysis, customer service, and problem resolution techniques; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment; current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence; correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
