Position Description
Applied Materials, Inc. is the leader in materials engineering solutions used to produce virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world.
Applied has an exciting opportunity to join a world-class Global Employment Law team. This attorney will provide proactive, practical legal advice and counsel to managers and human resources on all aspects of the employment lifecycle, including hiring, investigations, discipline/performance management, and terminations. This attorney will also be responsible for working on cross-functional teams and advising on employment law compliance.
The candidate will be expected to have a strong foundation of employment and litigation experience. The selected candidate will also participate in shaping policy, programs, and training on issues related to employment law compliance (manager training, sexual harassment training, etc.).
This position is onsite (full-time, 5 days) and based in Austin, TX.
Key Responsibilities
Advise and counsel on employment issues
Provide strategic legal and practical business advice to HR and business management on various employment related issues
Manage, independently or in coordination with outside counsel as appropriate, employment litigation and arbitration matters, administrative charges, settlement negotiations, subpoena responses, audit responses and regulatory filings
Manage and coordinate outside counsel on labor, employment or compliance issues including outside counsel budgets and work product
Create and conduct training on employment law related matters
Lead and partner with HR with creating and revising company policies, procedures, and programs.
Collaborate with other functions within the legal department and company to drive strategic objectives
Monitor legal trends in employment law and proactively develop strategy to address emerging risks, ensure compliance, and position the organization ahead of legal changes
Basic Qualifications
Juris Doctorate Degree
7+ years of experience with a combination of employment law and employee mobility experience at top tier law firm and/or as in-house counsel
Employment law experience, including employment litigation, employment compliance, and employee relations investigations and advice and counsel
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work cross functionally and with global, diverse teams
Ability to proactively identify and solve complex problems, and think beyond existing solutions and frameworks
Strong interpersonal, writing, and communication skills; ability to clearly articulate and visually present complex legal advice to non-attorneys, including HR Partners and managers at all levels
Strong analytical abilities and excellent decision-making
Ability to assess risk, engage in early case assessment, and leverage strategies for cost efficient case resolution
Ability to work both independently and within a team, and ability to gain the trust of business stakeholders to achieve a desired objective
Ability to travel periodically
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in-house at technology company
Employee mobility experience, including restrictive covenants (e.g. non-solicits, non-competes) and related confidentiality and intellectual property issues

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.
For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
