Position Overview

The Staff Accountant is a senior accounting role responsible for overseeing advanced accounting functions within a construction environment. This position plays a key role in financial reporting, job costing, compliance, reconciliations, banking, tax filings, and consolidation activities. Working closely with the Controller, leadership team, and cross-functional partners, this individual ensures accurate financial data, strong internal controls, and timely reporting to support business decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Project Accounting & Reporting

Prepare, analyze, and review monthly financial reports, including Work in Progress (WIP) schedules

Evaluate project costs, margins, and variances, identifying trends and opportunities for improvement

Forecasting & Budget Support

Maintain and update financial forecasts in alignment with project performance and operational inputs

Compliance & Internal Controls

Ensure adherence to GAAP, company accounting policies, and construction-specific regulatory requirements

Monitor internal controls to protect company assets and ensure accuracy of financial records

Assist with internal and external audits, resolving findings in a timely manner

Account Reconciliations

Perform and oversee monthly reconciliations for general ledger accounts, including bank, AR, and AP

Partner with the accounting team to research and resolve discrepancies

Maintain thorough documentation to support audits and reviews

Journal Entries

Prepare and post monthly journal entries including accruals, allocations, intercompany, and other adjustments

Ensure all entries are properly supported and accurately recorded

Fixed Assets & Equipment

Maintain the fixed asset register and track additions, depreciation, transfers, and disposals

Coordinate with operations on asset tagging, tracking, and physical inventory counts

Support reporting related to asset utilization, depreciation schedules, and valuations

Cash Receipts & Intercompany Activity

Record daily cash receipts accurately and in a timely manner

Prepare and reconcile monthly intercompany billings between entities

Consolidations & Financial Statements

Perform financial consolidations for multiple entities, including eliminations and adjustments

Prepare consolidated financial statements in accordance with accounting standards

Banking & Treasury

Manage banking transactions and account reconciliations, including deposits and withdrawals

Tax Reporting

Prepare and calculate city, county, state, and property tax filings

Complete quarterly and annual tax reports while maintaining detailed support documentation

Systems & Process Improvement

Assist with accounting system enhancements or implementations, including user training

Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

Required Skills & Qualifications

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Experience with construction accounting software such as Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate

Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines

High level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail

Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-accounting stakeholders
