Summary The Supervisory Social Worker - Inpatient Medicine position is assigned to the Inpatient Medicine/Surgery (Me/Surg) wards, at the Washington DC VA Medical Center. The Supervisory Social Worker, provides supervision, administrative coordination, and clinical leadership to a team of social workers assigned to inpatient medicine/surgery units. Responsibilities The Supervisory Social Worker has the responsibility to provide leadership, guidance, and supervision to the social workers assigned to the Inpatient Medicine/Surgery wards. Provides administrative, technical, and clinical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the wards. As a clinical team member, the Supervisory Social worker conducts evidence based psychosocial treatment, psychological assessments, provides direct clinical services, and assists with difficult discharges and veterans awaiting placement. Some duties include, but are not limited to: Works cooperatively with the Medical/Surgical Teams, Interdisciplinary Teams, and other services throughout the medical center, while providing consultation regarding the clinical care of complex cases. Performs the administrative and personnel management function relative to the performance of staff supervised. Works to resolve informal complaints and grievances. Develops work improvement plans. Performs program analysis, development, review, research, design, and contract work as possible with various agencies. Completes biopsychosocial assessment, evaluation, and diagnostic services for veterans receiving care within the inpatient medical/surgical units. Provides education to patients and family members regarding medical and mental health concerns. Renders consultation to health care providers regarding assessment findings and treatment plans. Experience must be evaluated to differentiate between independent practice and advanced practice levels. A social worker practicing at the independent level has a generalized knowledge of practice, (which is required for all social workers at the full performance level and above.), whereas the social worker practicing at the advanced level has specialized knowledge of practice typically related to a particular diagnosis or patient population. The advanced practice social worker can be further differentiated from the independent practice social worker by their ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, provide consultation and guidance to colleagues, role model effective social work practice skills, teach or provide orientation to less experienced social workers, develop innovations in practice interventions, and provide clinical supervision for social work licensure or certification. A social worker with advanced practice skills and personal qualifications that meet the standard for the senior social worker will have passed an advanced generalist or clinical Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) examination and be assigned to a position that requires use of the advanced practice skills in order to be considered for the senior social worker grade Grade Determinations: Supervisory Social Worker, GS-12 Licensure Requirement: Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Experience Requirement: You must possess one year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
