Summary The Special Procedures and Infusion Services Assistant Nurse Manager is a professional RN who is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. The ANM is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and practice. The ANM assists and supports the NM in leading the department strategic planning and contributes to its success by effectively communicating goals and expectations to staff. Responsibilities The Special Procedures and Infusion Services Assistant Nurse Manager assumes the following major duties and responsibilities: Assists the NM in ensuring 24/7 accountability in planning, managing, and providing high-quality patient care. Functions as a Charge Nurse, front-line staff member, and resource staff when department needs require it. Serves as a clinical expert resource for personnel in procedural and infusion practices practice using advanced knowledge, evidence, and prevailing clinical recommendations to guide the development of standards for optimal patient care. Utilizes a variety of performance improvement tools and procedural/infusion scheduling programs to assist the NM in analyzing data to improve efficiency and safety. Helps analyze data (procedural and infusion metrics, overtime use reports, etc.) and supports the creation and implementation of performance improvement plans. Directs the flow of procedural cases and infusion cases, ensuring effective use of system resources and provides functional expertise essential to staff and leadership. Acts as a liaison between supervisors, physicians, nursing personnel, patients/families, and other departments to ensure smooth transitions of patient care activities. Ensures unit staff competency for procedural and infusion patient care and assists in creating staffing plans that reflect patient care needs. Responsible for creating the staff schedule, managing staffing request changes, and maintaining adequate staffing levels. Assists the Unit Based Practice Council (UBPC) and the NM in developing, maintaining, and implementing the five-star board, daily management huddle, and addressing processes related to feedback from the All-Employee Survey (AES). Actively participates in and supports Shared Governance and Relationship Based Care and related activities at the department level. Assists the NM in assessing staff educational needs, ensure completion of mandatory training, & recruitment activities. Facilitates communication between departmental staff. Meets regularly with medical staff to share information and problem solve. Maintains knowledge of The Joint Commission requirements and ensures compliance with VA, TJC, and OSHA standards. Adheres to guidelines from the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses Associates (SGNA), American Society of Clinical Oncology/Oncology Nursing Society (ASCO/ONS), and Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice. Maintains knowledge of specific performance results and metrics such as Strategic Analytics for Improvement Learning (SAIL), Nurse Sensitive Indicators (NDNQI), Veterans Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program (VASQIP). Collaborates with front-line staff/Unit Practice Councils (UPCs) to implement changes in unit processes related to feedback from the All-Employee Survey (AES). Participates in recruitment and retention functions and assists Human Resources with hiring needs, updating organizational charts, reviewing candidate certificates, interviewing candidates, performing reference checks, and completing staffing methodology. Supports NM in managing nursing unit functions such as timekeeping, labor maps, emergency disaster cascade, changes of work schedules, overseeing Reusable Medical Equipment (RME), conducting staff meetings, overseeing monthly audits, Mock Tracers, TMS compliance, Environment of Care Rounds, inspections, workload activity reports, enforcement of regulations and directives, Patient Event Reports, centralized temperature monitoring, procedural and infusion scheduling. Represents the department in meetings in the absence of the Special Procedures/Infusion Services Nurse Manager. Participates in completion of initial and ongoing staff competencies. Educates staff on regulatory standards of practice. Ensures occurrence reports (JPSR), sentinel events, and other problem-prone areas are analyzed and systems are designed or re-designed and implemented when appropriate. Demonstrate leadership in identifying, analyzing, and addressing ethical issues that impact patients. Collaborates with peers and leaders to evaluate various outcomes based on strategic priorities such as patient care, staff education and development, and VA Performance Measures. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program.
