Job Title: Mechanical Engineer
Department: Engineering
Summary
The Mechanical Engineer role supports the design, analysis, integration, and production of mission-critical marine mechanical & electrical systems and equipment. This role develops 3D models and production drawings, performs structural/thermal/fluid analyses as required, and coordinates with electrical, controls, production, and shipyard teams to deliver compliant, install-ready solutions for commercial, offshore, and government/naval platforms. This position plays an important role in meeting our policy of supporting the continued success of our customers.
Responsibilities:
Design & Modeling
Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, and installation arrangements for marine equipment, foundations, enclosures, machinery, and related components.
Produce high-quality 2D production drawings, fabrication packages, and bills of materials (BOMs) with strong GD&T discipline.
Create ship integration deliverables such as layout drawings, foundation/interface drawings, and installation details aligned to shipyard standards.
Manage design data and revisions in PDM/PLM systems; execute ECR/ECO workflows and maintain configuration control.
Marine Integration & Production Support
Coordinate with shipyard/outfitting teams to ensure designs are buildable, serviceable, and install-ready (clearances, lifting, access, maintainability).
Support material selection and manufacturing methods; collaborate with procurement and suppliers to define technical requirements and resolve issues.
Provide shopfloor and field support during fabrication, assembly, installation, and commissioning; troubleshoot mechanical integration issues.
Engineering Analysis (as required by program scope)
Perform or oversee structural analyses (static, fatigue, modal/vibration) for foundations, brackets, equipment supports, and machinery components.
Perform or oversee CFD/thermal/fluid analyses for cooling, ventilation, intake/discharge, and heat rejection challenges when applicable.
Conduct piping network and/or pipe stress analysis for marine piping systems as required (supports, flexibility, vibration, thermal growth).
Quality, Testing, and Compliance
Develop and support test plans (FAT/SAT), inspection criteria, and technical documentation packages.
Work with class societies and customers to support approvals, reviews, and compliance documentation (as applicable).
Participate in root-cause investigations and corrective actions (NCR/MRB), driving practical solutions that protect schedule and quality.
Project Execution
Support engineering estimates, schedules, and risk management for assigned work packages.
Communicate progress, constraints, and technical trade-offs clearly to internal leadership and program stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline).
Experience: [8+] years in marine, shipbuilding, offshore, industrial equipment, or mission-critical mechanical design (government/defense a plus).
3D CAD proficiency: Demonstrated experience with one or more: SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, PTC Creo, Siemens NX, CATIA.
2D drafting: Strong AutoCAD capability and experience producing fabrication/installation drawings.
Configuration control: Experience with PDM/PLM tools (e.g., SolidWorks PDM, Autodesk Vault, Teamcenter, Windchill, 3DEXPERIENCE).
Drawing practices: Proven ability creating detailed drawings, BOMs, and applying GD&T.
Marine integration mindset: Knowledge of shipboard installation constraints (space, access, weight/COG impacts, corrosion protection, maintainability).
Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with electrical, controls, production, procurement, and shipyard teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
Shipyard / Outfitting Platforms
Experience with shipbuilding design environments: AVEVA Marine / AVEVA E3D, CADMATIC, ShipConstructor.
Clash management, spool/production outputs, and model-based shipyard workflows.
Simulation & Analysis Tools
FEA experience with ANSYS Mechanical, Abaqus, MSC Nastran/Patran, or Altair HyperWorks/OptiStruct.
CFD/thermal experience with ANSYS Fluent/CFX, STAR-CCM+, or OpenFOAM.
Piping & Fluid Systems
Pipe stress tools: Caesar II or AutoPIPE.
Network tools: AFT Fathom/Arrow or PIPE-FLO.
Familiarity with hydraulics simulation tools (e.g., Simcenter Amesim or MATLAB/Simulink) is a plus.
Marine/Vessel Tools & Standards
Working familiarity with weight/COG tracking and vessel interfaces (e.g., Rhino/Orca3D, NAPA exposure).
Familiarity with marine class and mechanical codes/standards (e.g., ABS, DNV, Lloyd's, and applicable ASME piping practices).
Competencies
Practical, installation-first design approach (buildable, maintainable, serviceable).
Strong ownership, attention to detail, and follow-through in a program environment.
Ability to balance cost, schedule, and technical risk while maintaining compliance and quality.
