Ensures secure by design principles are integrated into engineering processes.
Develops and implements solutions to complex technical and/or design challenges that may involve multiple technical and business-related variables, and applies lessons learned (including those from security incidents) to help develop future focused solutions to complex design challenges.
Reads device specification sheets and interprets complex details required to design and test various hardware features. Writes internal device specification sheets. Includes secure defaults and security compliance metrics in specifications.
Displays deep knowledge in multiple technical areas and acquires advanced knowledge of industry trends, competitor products, and advances in various engineering fields. Shares knowledge with others on their team and helps other engineers understand and apply advanced concepts.
Participates in creating intellectual property and conducts technical due diligence. May file patents within own area of scope and completes necessary patent documentation, while adhering to security governance guidelines and frameworks.
Clearly specifies dimensions and measurement requirements that and can be used in statistical analyses to evaluate product cost and quality. Advises other engineers and internal partners on recommended measurement tools and processes.
Provides make-versus-buy recommendations to management with tradeoffs based on complexity, financial impact, quality, reliability, and time duration. Influences decision making with stakeholders working on similar products.
Independently develops drawings that contribute to the development of complex, new products or features using modeling tools. Provides guidance to other engineers on the use of fundamental features of modeling tools.
Identifies partner or supplier using established criteria, such as adherence to security governance, through prescreening process. Sets agendas for workshops and makes presentations to collaborate with external partner or supplier.
Applies expertise in predictive modeling techniques (e.g., tolerance analysis, Finite Element Analysis, Design for Six Sigma) to inform design choices for a moderately feature or product and to assess and minimize security risks.
Project Implementation
Researches and identifies new tools, technologies, or processes for project implementation to improve product quality, security, performance, and reliability.
Resolves design issues, identifies recurring issues, and makes recommendations for necessary design changes and design tradeoffs (e.g., extendibility or refurbishing) for multiple products.
Generates project implementation schedules, monitors performance against schedules, and helps determine resource dependencies for the hardware engineering aspects of complex features or products. Guides other team members.
Evaluates and approves a variety of details of the reliability of materials, properties, and techniques used in production of large designs.
Implements and tracks product plans that account for the user experience, enable customer/partner testing scenarios, identify critical requirements (e.g., function, quality, safety, reparability, and/or reliability) and are verifiable while maintaining secure operations.
Communicates project progress/status within and external to the project team (e.g., to customers and partners) and escalates issues as necessary.
Suggests project areas that can support Material Change Review Board (MCRB) efforts to improve and react to production issues, as required within a project team.
Guides their team's review of supplier or partner products and participates in making supplier or partner selection decisions to support product development.
Identifies the most significant project risks (e.g., supplier or partner delays, incomplete specs, security, or tool issues) at the outset of a project, and develops plans to address those risks. Incorporates learnings (including those from security incidents) from previous projects.
Reporting and Documentation
Documents complex details about materials, components, and/or functionality for complex devices via accepted drawing release processes and highlights potential compatibility, safety, security, or compliance issues. Accurately records and tracks changes to designs following established configuration management and provides guidance to other engineers documenting these details.
Writes customized reports and functional specifications for an established product or product feature, based on audits and information from product development and verification processes. Reviews and provides feedback on other engineer's documentation.
Testing and Verification
Identifies new tools, test methodologies, and best practices for creating test cases that include elements such as success and security metrics and tracking systems.
Records test data and conducts complex data/statistical analysis to identify bugs, defects, or failures rates, advises other engineers on the use of predictive modeling software (e.g., Excel, Flowtherm, Mechanica, Creo), complies reports, adheres to data security and privacy protocols.
Reviews documentation to help ensure that the appropriate test requirements (including security logging and audits) and improvements are included in relevant hardware designs and specifications by applying an understanding of how complex features or products work under a variety of customer scenarios.
Creates external testing supplier or partner engagement plans, evaluates supplier or partner readiness and security posture, and captures supplier or partner knowledge for use across a product group.
Guides other engineers in how to set up and break down testing environments. Outlines safety, security, and testing guidelines for other engineers.
Reviews documentation to help ensure that the appropriate test requirements and improvements are included in relevant hardware designs and specifications by applying an understanding of how complex features or products work under a variety of customer scenarios.
Co-develops methods of measurement with appropriate partners (e.g., Design Verification Engineering, Manufacturing Test Equipment Engineering, Reliability Engineering) for measuring features of new product technology based on newly created or modified verification plans.
Develops, reviews, and executes test plans for complex feature areas or products.
Uses root cause analysis to identify highly complex problems or flaws that may affect a range of feature or product design changes. Identifies possible solutions to novel and complex problems across a group of similar products or feature areas.
Develops advanced proto@type hardware components for use in development, testing and/or validation of complex new product features. Provides guidance to other engineers developing product features. Evaluates proto@types for the purpose of innovating, optimizing and maturing designs.
