About the Responsibilities
Under general supervision, the Industrial Coating Specialist (https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/capaz/classspecs/1373893?keywords=industrial%20coatings&page@type=classSpecifications) performs journeyman level work utilizing multiple surface preparation techniques and application of Epoxies, Urethanes, Polisiloxanes, Polyurea and other industrial coatings to pumps, piping, valves, vehicles and other equipment; prepares and paints a wide variety of exterior and interior surfaces of CAP buildings, structures, equipment, machinery and facilities; depending on the competency level of the position, may provide work direction and guidance to other industrial painters; and performs related duties as required. The work contributes to the efficient and reliable operation of the Central Arizona Project (CAP) pumping plants, aqueduct, and related facilities and supports the reliable delivery of water.
Some of the duties include:
Prepares a wide variety of surfaces for painting and the application of specialized Industrial Epoxies, Urethanes, Polisiloxanes, Polyurea and other painting materials, using multiple preparation techniques to prepare surfaces for proper adherence such as Abrasive Blasting, Ultra-High Pressure Water Jetting, hand tooling, etc. Identifies equipment to be used and prepares Job Hazard Analyses/Pre Job-Brief forms. Schedules assignments based on work orders and instructions. Uses hand and power tools and equipment including spray equipment such as Air Assisted, Airless, Electric, HVLP, and Plural Component Systems, to apply paint. Sets up scaffolding, ladders and lifts to safely reach high surfaces. Constructs tenting to protect adjacent structures during the painting process.
Trains and instructs crew members in the safe and proper use of departmental tools, equipment and materials. Tests paint surfaces for lead based paint and coordinates with CAP lead abatement programs. Performs lock out/tag out procedures following established directives.
Depending on competency level, may lead a crew. May provide work direction, coordinate activities, plan and schedule work needs and ensure work is completed as scheduled.
Travels to various locations along CAP for multiple days in a row, staying overnight for up to 3 nights on a normal schedule. During heavy workloads travel could be as much as 5 nights in a row. Travel can be as much as 70% or more of the position.

About the Qualifications
The successful candidate for this position will have:
High-school diploma or equivalent.
Completed state or federal certified industrial painter apprenticeship; or have an equivalent combination of education, experience and demonstrated ability (which must include an additional three (3) years of experience).
Four (4) years of skilled journeyman-level industrial painting experience, including spray painting and the use of industrial epoxies and other coatings; OR completion of the CAP industrial painter apprenticeship program (or other apprenticeship deemed comparable to CAP apprenticeship by management).
Certifications or Licenses:
This position will require the attainment of various certifications through organizations such as The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) up to and including Certified Coatings Inspector Certifications, Concrete Coating Technician, Fundamentals of Protective Coatings, Lead/Hazardous Paint Removal, Abrasive Blaster Certification, Spray Application Certification and Water Jetting Program.
CAP-specific physical testing is required for this safety sensitive position, in part to ensure the ability to safely lift up to 75 pounds and work on ladders.
Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record.
May be requested to acquire a CDL (Class "A" Commercial Driver's License) during employment.
Upon accepting a conditional offer of employment, may be required to pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) annual physical exam.
