Description of Job
This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a Labor Crew Supervisor for the Delta Correctional Center (DCC), a Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facility. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; ensuring safe, secure and compliant completion of work and projects; ensuring proper supervision and training of inmate labor crews both on and off facility grounds. This position supports the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment.
Safety and Security- position trains and guides inmates in proper procedures regarding controlled items, key, tool and chemical control. Conducts inmate counts, shakedowns, searches, escorts and applies the proper application of restraints and use of force. Through conscientious observation and adherence to the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe & secure work environment on and off facility grounds. This position may be assigned as sole supervision and transport of as many as ten inmates to remote sites.
Operations- position supervises an inmate work crew in all phases of light construction projects which may include but are not limited to: carpentry, remodeling, painting, concrete work, trail building, road repair, grounds maintenance and fencing and tree felling and brush cutting. Assesses inmate competency through written and on-the-job testing, recommends hiring or transfer of inmate workers. Position schedules work by coordinating with client agency project coordinator, researches and allocates needed resources and materials; trains, instructs and monitors inmate crew in proper methods, tools and equipment use; ensures projects are being completed according to specifications and any relevant code, standard or regulation.
Supervision- position is Work Leader of inmate labor crews. Promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission and values; assigns tasks, tracks hours and payroll, performs inmate performance evaluations, resolves informal grievances and makes recommendations for corrective or disciplinary actions. This position works to prepare inmates for successful community reentry.
**Position transports inmate crews to remote locations, utilizing land navigation and orienteering skills and operates vehicles off highway and in rugged terrain.
**Position requires physical stamina, a great deal of walking, and hiking, and works outdoors during inclement weather year round.
May be required to work in confined spaces, high places or in close proximity to industrial equipment.
On occasion, position will be required to work additional hours or shifts to maintain safety and security.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:
Four (4) years of employment experience in avarietyof building/construction trades performing preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance such as carpentry, painting, grounds maintenance, concrete work, asphalt/road repair, remodeling and/or fencing.
OR
Applicant may meet the four (4) year requirement with a combination of work experience as follows:
A minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with correctional experience. (If you are using correctional experience, be sure to include details in the 'Work Experience' section of the application)
Correctional Experience- must besecurity related duties whereprimary responsibilities includeddetaining, controlling movement and escorting offenders in a prison facility; conducting counts and searches while monitoring offender assignments and movement throughout the day.
Substitutions:
Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or degree through an accredited, non- correspondence vocational or trade school that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to those learned through the required experience may substitute for experience on a year for year basis. Please attach transcripts if you are using this substitution. Transcripts must include the name of the institution, your student ID #, a listing of the course curriculum, the degree earned and the date awarded.

Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension , relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics

Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows
Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows

Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment
Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
