We are seeking an innovative, highly motivated, and culturally responsive Academic Advisor to join our team.
Reporting to the Director of Advising, you will serve as primary academic advisor for undeclared first and second year Dietrich undergraduates and be responsible for maintaining detailed records for each student. This position will guide students along their educational journey at Carnegie Mellon University with an emphasis on holistic advising and support from the transition to college through to major declaration.
Primary Responsibilities:
Meets individually with students to review academic progress. Provides holistic guidance in developing personalized education plans for advisees which include fulfilling general educational and degree requirements, exploring experiential learning opportunities, making academic progress and setting personal goals.
Support students through the summer onboarding process, including helping to explain course registration, major and general education requirements, and other components of the first year
Assists students in setting, meeting, and revising academic, personal, and professional goals
Helps students develop skills to balance rigorous academics, utilize campus resources, and engage in active learning and reflection
Performs administrative tasks related to advising: maintaining student files and records, evaluating transfer credits and recommending academic actions. Prepares and submits weekly, monthly and annual effort reports.
Maintains a strong understanding of University and College policies and procedures to provide information about campus-wide resources to enhance the student's overall educational experience.
Through close monitoring and independent managing of student cases, determines when sensitive or complex matters should be brought to the attention of the Director of Advising.
Helps students make difficult academic decisions including taking leaves of absence, withdrawing from the university or petitioning to go below full-time.
Maintains composure, respect and integrity, and follows all the necessary processes and laws around student information sharing.
Meets with prospective students and families and represents the college at numerous admissions events, including evenings and weekends on occasion.
Liaises with other resources on campus to provide holistic support for students.
Serves as appropriate on university and college-wide committees.
Attends all meetings involving college & university advisors.
Performs related duties and special projects as required.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred.
1-3 years of proven experience in a student-facing academic setting required.
