Mechanical Engineer - Vision Systems

LSP USA is seeking Mechanical Engineers--Vision Systems to perform the following duties:

Vision System Architecture & Manufacturing Integration

Design and define vision inspection systems for electric vehicle (EV) battery cell manufacturing, using camera-based inspection to automatically detect defects and maintain product quality during high-speed processes such as roll-to-roll coating and roll press operations.

Translate manufacturing conditions---such as line speed variation, web tension behavior, press pressure, surface texture, and vibration---into vision system design requirements and configuration standards.

Specify and integrate core vision system hardware, including line-scan cameras, optical assemblies, illumination units, encoders, trigger boards, and I/O modules, to achieve synchronized image acquisition under variable production conditions.

Establish mechanical layout, optical alignment, and signal synchronization criteria for new installations and system upgrades to ensure repeatable inspection performance.

Define and manage interfaces between vision systems and manufacturing equipment, including I/O mapping, communication protocols, and MES-linked inspection data flows for recipes, defect logs, and quality maps.

Support operation of specialized inspection equipment, including PRI insulation thickness measurement systems, for early identification of coating quality variation and equipment abnormalities.

Optical Configuration & Image Acquisition Control

Design optical configurations for line-scan--based inspection systems, including lens selection, magnification, optical axis alignment, and illumination geometry suitable for wide-web, continuous inspection.

Select and configure optical components---such as lenses, diffusers, and polarizers---based on reflectance behavior, light loss, scattering characteristics, and illumination uniformity requirements.

Define image acquisition conditions through analysis of encoder pulses, trigger timing, and exposure parameters to maintain image stability during speed changes and transient operating conditions.

Evaluate mechanical and environmental factors---such as vibration, motion dynamics, and web instability---that affect image quality, and incorporate appropriate controls within the vision system design.

Inspection Performance Engineering & Validation

Establish inspection performance requirements and support stable defect detection through image-level analysis, including contrast behavior, edge characteristics, surface texture variation, and pattern deformation.

Analyze false detection and missed detection trends and adjust inspection parameters to maintain consistent detection sensitivity across expected process variation.

Characterize inspection targets and defect @types commonly observed in coating and roll-press processes, including voids, pinholes, cracks, wrinkles, line defects, and heat- or reflection-related patterns.

Perform structured validation and regression testing following system updates, configuration changes, or manufacturing condition shifts to verify inspection stability and reliability.

Technical Documentation, Cross-Functional Collaboration & Knowledge Transfer

Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including vision system specifications, configuration standards, validation records, calibration guidelines, and operating instructions.
