GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB:
The Paralegal performs a wide variety of paralegal/legal clerical and special projects duties to include but not limited to research, major case document management, trial preparation, and advanced technical assistance to Chief Deputy District Attorneys, Deputy District Attorneys, Investigators, Victim/Witness and general law enforcement personnel. Subject matter for these cases could include sensitive topics from the following departments but limited to: Organized Crime Unit, Special Victims Unit, Domestic Violence Unit, and Felony-Homicides.
DUTIES:
Reads, analyzes, cross-references and processes initial and on-going discovery (including the duplication of audio/video materials); produces copies and prepares notification for defense attorney of availability for pick-up.
Prepares and maintains case (witness) notebooks electronically of discovery, work product, motions, transcripts, etc., proficient use of Adobe Acrobat Pro and One Note.
Prepares and maintains computer database to log and document case data related to police investigators, evidence, lay and expert witnesses/relationship to case, testimony, photos, motions, etc; prepares and produces a variety of reports as requested that f acilitate the attorney's ability to group and isolate specific aspects of the case during trial preparation.
Conducts limited research on case law and applicable statutes as necessary to draft and prepare a wide variety of motions, petitions, notices, memos, warrants and affidavits for attorney review and signature; f iles same with court.
Prepares and sends correspondence and other forms of request to law enforcement, related agencies, other jurisdictions, courts, and defense attorneys to obtain additional discovery, general necessary information, and/or other case-related materials and documents.
Runs witness criminal histories as applicable, prepares and presents various memoranda, diagrams, charts and audio/visual presentations for hearings and trials; custody of physical evidence and testifies as necessary on chain of custody of same.
Uses photo and/or video editing software for high volume redactions. Use computer to manage case related documentation to include correspondence, jury instructions, Action eventing, subpoena
Organizes and schedules periodic meetings of case principals to share information and update same on case progress and status.
Attends court hearings and trials to assist attorneys with trial preparation, exhibits, and courtroom support.
Completes a variety of special projects to respond to requests for assistance outside of normal docket caseload, e.g. Grand Jury, prosecution of law enforcement personnel, cold cases, Administration requests for special reports/logs, training presentations, etc.
Appeals - CCJRA/CORA
Performs a wide variety of moderately complex legal duties in support of the Appellate Unit -Primary function is to assist with Colorado Open records Act (CORA) and Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act (CCJRA) requests and Subpoenas to Produce received by the Office of the District Attorney.
REQUIREMENTS:
Considerable knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures and structure of court levels (i.e. county to district, district to Court of Appeals, and/or Colorado Supreme Court). Working knowledge of general office procedures and practices. Considerable knowledge of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize aspects of work to comply with statutorily mandated deadlines.
Ability to follow semi-complex oral and written instructions. Ability to be detail oriented, multi-task, and prioritize tasks and deadlines. Ability to operate standard office equipment, e.g. personal
computer, fax, copier and considerable knowledge of Word, Excel, Adobe, and other MS Office programs.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, fellow workers, attorneys, court officials, other police and related agencies' personnel, including the FBI and U.S.
Attorney's Office, and the general public both locally and nationwide; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with same.
Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment, aptitude for exhausting available resources before asking for assistance, and capacity to analyze, research and communicate effectively.

Education and Experience:
HS diploma or GED. Bachelor's degree or Paralegal Certification preferred
4+ years progressively responsible legal clerical experience with at least two (2) years of experience at the Legal Secretary II level or related equivalent experience.
A paralegal degree may be substituted for two years of the required experience
Any equivalent combination of education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.
Post Employment Requirements:
Security clearance required: will require fingerprinting and a Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) background check.
Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:
Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check.
Possession of a valid Class "R" Colorado Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment.

Work is generally confined to a standard office environment.
