Duties Description POSITION DESCRIPTION: Performs Journeyman level duties as part of a regional construction crew that will perform renovations at OPWDD's properties. The incumbent must be able to work effectively both independently and as a cohesive group made up of other tradespeople in order to achieve the desired goals often within critical time frames.Daily travel within the district is required and may require travel within NY State to assist other districts with special projects.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- Performs Journeyman level plumbing/steam fitting duties and supervises others in the trade repairs, maintains and installs plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, showers/baths, toilets, dishwashers, and garbage disposals.- Repairs, maintains, and installs equipment such as gas water heaters, heat exchangers, heating equipment, water pumps and other equipment related to steam, gas, or water systems. Plans and lays out installation, alteration, and repair of high- and low-pressure piping systems that carry water, steam, air or other liquids or gases. Has ability to review plans and lay out building plumbing systems.- Ability to work off ladders and scaffolds in performing their job.- Ability to estimate quantity of materials needed to perform work assigned.- Acts as lead tradesman in task assigned and provide supervision and guidance to others.- Ability to schedule work with other trades in order to keep jobs on schedule and to achieve the desired outcome.Linked In: http://www.linkedin.com/company/nys-office-for-people-with-developmental-disabilities/posts/?feedView=all #LI-JL2PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade or trades to which assigned.- Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.- Work schedule may vary based on operational need.- Will be required to train and supervise others. Candidate will be trained in the operation and maintenance procedures as related to Asbestos Containing Materials.- Will be required to plan and lay out work, develop time and material lists for projects assigned.- Will be required to read and interpret plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints, and specifications.- Basic computer skills preferred.- Valid NYS driver's License. When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the @type of vehicle to be operated.
Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson; which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter traineeship or a two-year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program. Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of "C" or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the @type of vehicle to be operated.Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter Trainee 1, NS (equivalent to SG-9):Full-time permanent service in a position allocated at Grade 12 or below which is primarily engaged in the performance of unskilled and/or semiskilled labor and trades tasks; must be 18 years of age or older; possess a High School diploma or general equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department; and be proficient in English and math.Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter Trainee 2, NS (equivalent to SG-11):Successful completion of a 52-week probationary period as a Trades Specialist Plumber and Steamfitter Trainee 1; OR completion of 45 hours of technical math coursework and 15 hours of blueprint reading/schematics coursework or passage of an equivalency exam or proof of successful completion of equivalent training, 144 hours of plumber and steamfitter trade-specific instruction, and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training. Trainees must maintain a "C" or better average in their coursework. When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the @type of vehicle to be operated.
Additional Comments Salary range listed below encompasses the hiring rate of a Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter Trainee 1 through the job rate of a Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter. Candidates hired at the trainee level will be advanced to the full performance Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter, SG-12 following successful completion of the traineeship. - Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter Trainee 1: $44,641 - Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter Trainee 2: $49,695 - Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter: $52,425 - $63,548 Amounts include Mid-Hudson adjustment ($2,000). - For CSEA positions: Local Bidding Agreements will be honored. - Preference will be given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures.
