Small Business | DoD & DHS Government Contractor

Location:Northern Virginia / HybridReports To:Chief Executive Officer

Overview

We are a growing small business government contractor supporting theDepartment of Defense (DoD)andDepartment of Homeland Security (DHS)seeking aController / Director of Financeto lead day-to-day financial operations. This is a hands-on role responsible for accounting, government contract billing, compliance, and financial reporting in a regulated environment. The position works closely with the CEO and external advisors and has a clear growth path as the company scales.

Key Responsibilities

Own monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close and reporting

Manage government contract accounting, billing, and revenue recognition

Ensure compliance withFAR, DFARS, HSAR, andDCAArequirements

Track and maintain indirect cost rates and support pricing activities

Support DCAA, DCMA, and DHS audits; maintain audit-ready documentation

Manage AP/AR, payroll, and cash flow monitoring

Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis

Coordinate with external CPA firms, auditors, and fractional CFO support

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

7+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience

Government contracting experience required(DoD and/or DHS preferred)

Strong working knowledge of FAR/DFARS and DCAA audit processes

Experience with government-compliant accounting systems - Deltek Costpoint

Hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable in a small business environment

Preferred

CPA or CMA certification

Experience supporting cost-plus, T&M, and fixed-price contracts

Experience in a small business or high-growth environment
