Warm Springs WMA is located near the cities of Anaconda and Butte, both have a rich history and any outdoor recreational opportunities. This position offers the opportunity to work outside on some of Montana's most diverse WMA's. The Maintenance Worker 2 is part of the Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division and a member of the regional maintenance team that includes the Regional Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Team Supervisor, Maintenance Workers 1 & 2, and Groundskeepers. The position reports to the Maintenance Team Supervisor in an assigned geographic area and performs a wide variety of semi-skilled or manual work repairing, maintaining, and improving habitat areas and vegetation as well as grounds and facilities at state parks, fishing access sites, wildlife management areas, and administrative facilities. In coordination with the Regional Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Team Supervisor and regional staff, the position directly and through subordinates performs maintenance tasks, and assists in establishing workflows for regular or routine tasks. This position may be assigned to multiple geographic units or be called upon to assist with, collaborate on, or share maintenance functions of another geographic unit as circumstances require. Employee may act as Maintenance Team Supervisor in that person's absence and regularly demonstrates independent decision-making and problem solving. The employee may also serve as a Lead Crew worker. Regional and site-specific variance may exist, and other duties may be assigned. Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities): Operates equipment such as mowers, powered weed trimmers, pick-ups, ATVs, chainsaws, power and hand tools. Performs basic repairs to building structures (including historic preservation at certain including windows, doors, floors, walls, fences. locations) Scrapes, paints, stains or treats building and structural surfaces including windows doors, picnic tables, shelters. Installs, repairs and maintains wood, steel, wire and other @types of fencing, signs, posts, kiosks, etc. Performs landscaping activities that include mowing, tree pruning, hazardous tree/sagebrush removal, irrigation and general care and planting of lawns, shrubs and trees to provide the site with safe and appropriate vegetation to reduce weed problems. This work includes the use of chain saws, pruning saws, mowers, tractors, weed trimmers and backhoe. Makes general repairs to equipment which may require training, notifies others when extensive repairs are required Performs specialized tasks requiring training in areas which may include plumbing, welding, carpentry, roofing, electrical, historic building stabilization some of which must meet specific codes or standards Performs plumbing and sewer system repairs and maintenance including working on pumps, wells, valves, commodes, sinks, pressure tanks, septic tanks, sewer lift stations, boiler system and various kinds of pipe including galvanized, copper and plastic. Fabricates specialized equipment, when needed Plans and determines weed control efforts using a variety of methodologies including chemical, social, biological and mechanical controls. Helps produce weed reports for weed maintenance at FWP sites. Perform weed control efforts including obtaining a commercial pesticide applicator. Coordinates with Maintenance Supervisor to track and report weed maintenance activities for the annual weed report. Comprehensive weed control efforts may include specialized training and work in chemical use, hydrogeology, and wetland management and permitting. Coordinates weed maintenance tasks with the County spray crews/ contractors while work performed. Makes site assignments and sets priorities for work. Gathers and removes garbage, debris, litter and performs janitorial and cleaning tasks. Performs basic preventative maintenance for equipment such as checking fluids, belts, hoses and filters and notifies others when significant repairs are required. Assists with daily maintenance logs and ensures record keeping and filing is sufficient in absence of maintenance supervisor. Also assists with ordering of supplies and materials, completing vehicle reports and other personnel logs and time reporting within required timeframes. Performs manual work to construct and/or repair property boundary fences, using permanent fences to minimize trespass by livestock. Performs manual work in maintaining roads, culverts, and bridges by using a variety of heavy and light equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, and hand tools. Performs habitat development and maintenance projects such as tree planting, grazing programs, mowing, farming, waterfowl nesting structures. Manages large scale irrigation systems. Monitors FWP sites and makes public contacts, documents incidents and events related to public safety, resource impacts. May collect fees and educate visitors on rules and regulations and report violations observed to superiors for follow up. May evaluate and familiarize all staff on equipment operation and maintenance. Participates in and may lead safety trainings and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment on all job duties. Assists with major maintenance construction and stabilization projects on site. In conjunction with the Maintenance Supervisor and other regional staff, the employee will help establish the correct procedures to complete a wide variety of skilled, semi-skilled or manual work repairing, constructing and maintaining buildings, land, water, grounds, and related facilities. Always conscientious of equipment use and demonstrates good leadership to other staff by paying extra attention to visitor use areas and cultural and environmental resources while performing job duties. Physical and Environmental Demands: This position frequently requires some office and computer work but most often requires field work under adverse weather and environmental conditions that may include: Temperature extremes, snow and rain, dust and mosquito infested areas. Confined areas, sometimes for extended periods, including attics, cellars and excavated areas. Waste water and sewage disposal systems with potential for contact with disease, virus and bacteria. Areas frequented by rodents with the potential for contact with disease such as Hantavirus. Hazardous chemicals, including various pesticides, solvents, paints and fuels. Exposed to welding fumes. 110 and 220-volt electrical systems and in close proximity to buried and overhead power lines. Heights, including roofs and scaffolding. Weekend, evening, and holiday hours including occasional overtime. Occasional time away from home or permanent workstation. Frequent exertion, often for extended periods, including lifting, carrying, digging and pounding. This position works with the public and may inform them of site rules and regulations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of methods and practices of general maintenance and construction work as related to buildings, facilities and grounds, use and care of tools, and operation of a variety of heavy and light construction and farm equipment. Knowledge of carpentry, woodworking, plumbing, welding, electrical and masonry work, engine repair and maintenance, and acknowledged industry standards required. Ability to perform combination thereof preferred. Knowledge of operations and maintenance of water, septic and boiler systems preferred. Frequently works independently without a direct supervisor being present; able to take initiative; ability to achieve and maintain a high level of quality work performance as interpreted by the supervisor; recognize and accept authority. In certain situations, awareness skills must be applied to situations where other factors may require a degree of sensitivity and restraint such as in wildlife management areas, riparian areas or historic and cultural sites. Must behave ethically and appropriately when serving visitors and where applicable, communicate effectively with the public, provide accurate information about site facilities, regulations, fees, and recreational opportunities. Skills and Abilities: Effective communication and computer skills, both verbal and written. Commercial driver's license or the ability to obtain. Ability to safely follow all traffic and state laws and ability to tow trailer with proper towing and safety protocols. Participates in and if qualified, provides training in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Ability to obtain a commercial pesticide applicators license to perform weed management and continue necessary pesticide operator trainings at an appropriate level in coordination with the Maintenance Team Supervisor. Water and boiler systems skills preferred; operator certifications or ability to obtain preferred. Must possess or have the ability to obtain Basic First Aid/CPR certification. * Must possess ability to use spreadsheets and other programs necessary to complete maintenance logs and personnel reports. Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience): The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalency and three years of job-related experience.
