Job Description
Position: Electrician (Pending Award)
Location: McMurdo Station, South Pole or Palmer Station
Type: Full-Time, Contract,
Duration: Approx. 5 months
Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location
Seasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Electricians will perform electrical maintenance or construction work, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Electrician Foreman, PM Coordinator, or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Tasking is based on employee's prior work experience and ASC schedule requirements.
Position Responsibilities:o Install, maintain, adjust, operate, test and repair branch circuits, power distribution wiring, electrical equipment, fixtures, lighting systems, and conduit in compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC)o Diagnose, repair, and perform scheduled Preventative Maintenance on existing electrical systems, equipment, fixtures, and infrastructureo Install fixtures, wiring conduits, motors and other electrical equipmento Inspect transformers and circuit breakers and other electrical components.
Accomplish tasking working from verbal information, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, documents, vendor/manufacturer manuals, and applicable electrical specifications and codeso Work standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipmento Use a variety of electrician's hand tools and measuring and testing instrumentso Analyze situations and make technical decisions based on specifications, safety, and electrical codeso Perform ongoing risk and hazard assessment while executing taskingo Appropriately use personnel protective equipment to include Arc Flash, electrical rated boots, gloves and non-conductive equipmento Timely response to emergency service calls during and outside of normal working hourso Work directly with other departments to plan and complete taskingo Utilize the assistance of other station personnel to complete tasking, or assist other trades or departments with their tasking as appropriateo Advise immediate Supervisor of job progress and material/labor requirementso Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involvedo Prepare and document work plans, job hazard analysis, job safety analysis, code required forms, checklists, and internal procedural documents as requiredo Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest revisions as needed, and create SOPs as directedo Perform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind and extreme cold weathero Proactively identify any unsafe conditions, hazards, or Code violations and communicate them effectivelyo Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirementso Participate in Work Center Safety Program and ASC safety objectiveso Be a responsible, clean, and safe custodian of work areas, tools, equipment and spare partso Perform other duties as required
Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:o High School diploma or GEDo A current Journeyman Electrician license, a current Master Electrician license, or equivalent Union membership in good standing. A Journeyman license requiring less than 8,000 hours or of the Residential @type shall not be considered.o Minimum four years (8,000 Hours) documented experience in all phases of electrical work including rough-in, trim-out, wiring of electrical equipment and fixtures, conduit installation, and power distribution wiring including voltages up to 480
Expected Skills and Competencies:o Thorough knowledge of the current National Electrical Code and the principles of electricityExperience in construction and/or maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilitieso Possess the competencies, willingness, and ability to perform the duties of positiono Skilled in ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, diagrams, maintenance manual and manufacturer's troubleshooting guides to accomplish taskingo Experienced developing written work plans, job hazard analysis, and job safety analysis related to the work activities under a permit to work systemo Thorough knowledge of the principles of electricity and the current National Electrical Codeo Proficient in the use of electrical/electronic and mechanical test equipment, instruments, measuring devices, and shop tools such as soldering units, meters, scopes, and probeso Highly skilled at troubleshooting using appropriate testing deviceso Extremely knowledgeable regarding occupational hazards of the electrical trade and related safety precautionso Expert in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipmento Knowledgeable concerning heating and air conditioning systemso Experienced in maintenance of commercial, government, industrial, and/or institutional facilitieso Possess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applicationso Proficient in LOTO procedures for various taskingo Proficient in electrical safety procedures (NFPA 70E and OSHA)o Proficient in risk assessment and determination of PPE appropriate to specific taskingo Knowledgeable of limits of PPE and proper maintenance of PPEo Familiar with fall protection and respirator useo Competent analyzing situations and making technical and safety decisions based on specifications and applicable codes and manufacturer guidelineso Solid decision-making ability and sound judgment to safely and effectively solve problemso Good organizational and planning skills
Preferred:o Training or certification on NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplaceo Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of heat trace on outdoor insulated pipingo Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of permanently installed UPS systemso Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of motor controls and Variable Frequency Driveso Experience with Maximo or other Computerized Maintenance Management Systemo Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of airfield runway lighting (McMurdo only)o Experience working with voltages up to 4160 (McMurdo and South Pole)
Physical and/or Other Requirements:o Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periodso Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarcticao Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employero Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSFo Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.o Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.o Must participate in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.o Valid Driver's License issued in the United Stateso Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
