This position exists to represent the entire State Fire Marshal (SFM) division at conferences, seminars, fire schools, county fire chief meetings, and regional fire department meetings. This position coordinates, supports and is a resource for the Minnesota fire service on various issues with emphasis on department administration and operations, e.g. formation of new departments, human resources coordination, operational policies and procedures, specifications and procurement of equipment/supplies, shared fire services, and coordination of services with other public safety entities and the private sector. In addition, the position will serve as the point of contact for coordination of the division emergency response functions within the Minnesota Emergency Operations Plan (MEOP), the Fire Service Intrastate Mutual Aid Plan and emergency support as requested. This position assists the fire code teams with support throughout the state, provides the Minnesota fire service with code advice and guidance on fire and life safety education. The Fire Services & Support Team (FSS) assists fire investigations performed by SFM investigators.
This position will be responsible for the southeast region of the State of Minnesota including the counties of: Carver, Dakota, Dodge, Fillmore, Goodhue, Hennepin, Houston, LeSueur, McLeod, Meeker, Mower, Olmsted, Renville, Rice, Scott, Sherburn, Sibley, Wabasha, Winona, Wright.
The incumbent of this position will be required to reside (and home office) within one of the counties listed below: Carver, Dakota, Dodge, Fillmore, Goodhue, Houston, LeSueur, McLeod, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Scott, Sibley, Wabasha, Winona. Counties excluded for residency, Hennepin, Sherburn, Wright, Meeker, Renville.

Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years' experience as a chief officer, addressing complex issues.
An associate's degree in fire science, fire protection engineering or fire investigation or closely related field, may substitute for one (1) year of the experience requirement
Strong knowledge of fire department operations, including suppression, investigation, inspections, public education, EMS, technical rescue, and training.
Familiarity with fire-related codes and standards, including the International Fire and Building Codes, NFPA standards, and NIMS.
Completion of Fire Officer I course (32-hour NFPA-compliant) prior to appointment; certification within six months.
Ability to complete Fire Inspector I and Fire Investigator coursework (NFPA-compliant), Hazardous Materials Technician certification, and FAA Part 107 Drone License within set timeframes.
Proficiency in standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint).
Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program.
Certified Fire Officer I, Hazardous Materials Technician, and licensed Commercial Drone Pilot (FAA Part 107).
Strong leadership background with experience in strategic planning, emergency response coordination, and departmental oversight.
Physical Requirements
Requires occasionally moving and transporting 50-pound items and frequently moving and transporting objects such as heavy tools, and heavy file boxes. This job may require positioning self to move to a significant degree across rough terrain or may involve maintaining a stationary position for extended periods.
