We Are Seeking
Team Gilbert is seeking a Commissioner to uphold justice and serve our community through fair and impartial judicial proceedings. As a vital member of Gilbert's Municipal Court, you'll conduct hearings on civil traffic matters, protective orders, injunctions, and civil code violations-ensuring every resident receives equitable treatment under the law. About You
You are an experienced attorney with deep knowledge of Arizona civil traffic, criminal law, and protective order proceedings, and a strong commitment to judicial ethics and impartiality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Presides over civil court proceedings. Conducts civil traffic arraignment hearings, contested civil traffic hearings, protective order hearings and contested protective order hearings. Listens to testimony, evaluates evidence, applies relevant rules, statutes, ordinances and case law and issues rulings.
Uses independent judgment and objectivity when hearing and evaluating evidence presented, questions witnesses and conducts legal research to determine applicable law. Applies law and precedent to facts and rules on evidence presented and assesses penalties, renders decisions, and issues rulings.
Prepares summaries of findings, enters legal decisions into the court record to prepare and submit necessary legal forms, records and paperwork required to document each decision and each step of legal proceedings.
Responds to questions, complaints, inquiries pertaining to the Court policies and procedures and actions taken. Resolves complaints and sensitive issues, interacts with Court management, prosecutors, law enforcement personnel and other municipal courts. Represents the Court to professional and community groups, the general public and the media.
Presides and issues rulings on criminal Pre-Trial Conferences, Bench Trials, Arraignments, Jury Trials, Initial Appearances and Probation violations.
Demonstrates professional integrity by showing a strong commitment to ethical behavior and moral values.

Minimum Qualifications and Special Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Juris Doctorate.
5 years of experience in Arizona civil traffic and criminal law; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential job duties such as those listed above.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
Admission to the Arizona State Bar Association and membership in good standing.

Arizona criminal statutes, rules and procedures.

Rules of judicial conduct, court policies and procedures.

This position is an At-Will position and is FLSA Exempt - ineligible for overtime compensation.
This department is currently working on site. Regardless of work location (Remote, On-Site, or Hybrid) Town of Gilbert employees are required to reside in the state of Arizona by hire.
