About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

The Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Role Overview:

This position will serve as a Bridge Design Intern for the Bridge Engineering Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Bridge Design Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support.

Hourly Rate:

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor's degree.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

Generate detailed drawings using computer-aided design and drafting software

Develop and prepare complete working plans by performing computations for geometrics, quantities, drainage, etc.

Design bridge components, including steel and concrete beams

Create contract documents

Review engineering plans for compliance with the Indiana Design Manual

Participate in field inspections

Other duties as assigned

What You'll Need for Success:

Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field

Relevant work experience preferred

Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT

Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations

Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process

Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports

Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Analytical skills

Ability to handle multiple projects

Ability to operate computer tools

Good research and writing skills

Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts

Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
