What You Will Do
The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of
engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national
security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Weapons Project Delivery group (ES-WPD). ES Groups are
responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of
systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. This position supports nuclear, accelerator or non-
nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory.
Note: This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1/Engineer 2 level depending on the skills of
the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the
higher level.
Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Engineer Level 1
As an Mechanical design engineer with Engineering Services, you will function as part of a design agency serving one of
three Facilities Operations Directorates (FODs). You will concurrently work on multiple design teams shaping LANL's
facilities and infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing Laboratory. Your teams will provide
engineering consulting services typical of any or all project phases: scoping; design; construction; commissioning;
operation. The level 1 role includes the following job opportunities:

Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Engineer Level 2
In addition to duties listed above, the level 2 role includes the following job duties:
Develop skills to independently run all mechanical engineering facets of a project from scoping to construction.
Foster relationships with project stakeholders and customers as a representative of Engineering Services.
Facilitate technical growth of the electrical design team.
What You Will Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Ability to support timely and collaborative construction execution. This includes timely review of submittals, requests for information (RFIs), design changes, non-conformance issues, validation of commissioning documentation and produce accurate as-built documents
Basic knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards
Additional Job Requirements for Mechanical Engineer Level 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Knowledge of HVAC and plumbing buildings systems.
Knowledge of engineering work planning and design coordination.
Ability to collaboratively problem solve, show commitment, and function well in a team environment.
Thorough knowledge of mechanical engineering principles.
Ability to apply building codes, standards and green initiatives to facilities design.
Demonstrated proficiency generating calculations.
Education/Experience for Mechanical Engineer 1:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of
practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.
Education/Experience for Mechanical Engineer 2:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3
years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or
technical degree is desired. 426.2 Min Requirements: Position requires a Bachelors and 1 year of nuclear experience.
Desired Qualifications:
For Engineer 2: Current registration as a professional engineer (any US State).
Design experience in nuclear, accelerator or industrial facility operations.
Master's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university.
Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD and/or Revit tools and work processes.
Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures.
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
