About the Board of Animal Health:
Creating a healthy, disease-free environment for Indiana's 31 million animals is no small feat. BOAH's team of veterinarians and animal health inspectors travel to all corners of the state to investigate possible outbreaks of disease and advise animal owners about disease prevention.
Role Overview:
This position supervises meat inspectors conducting inspection activities in the Southwest portion of the state - approximately 18 counties.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $47,320.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Schedule inspectors to ensure appropriate inspection coverage.
Review inspections to assure proper application of ante-mortem and postmortem inspection techniques, sanitation standards, product process controls, product composition, labeling and condemned product disposition.
Conduct inspections when necessary and periodic comprehensive reviews of all facilities in the assigned area.
Assist and supervise subordinates in the development, implementation, and inspection of required HACCP, SSOP, and pathogen reduction programs.
Coordinate, supervise and conduct sampling of products and ingredients for chemistry and microbiological testing.
Provide proper interpretation of regulations, procedures, and information consistent with division and agency policy.
Assist in development of programs with plant management.
Review Performance Based Inspection System summary reports and correlate to actual plant activities and conditions.
Perform inspection system reviews as part of the State Performance Plan.
Disseminate information, materials, and supplies to employees.
Represent the division in contacts with local health departments, consumers, livestock raisers and marketers and local government officials
Assure the human handling and slaughter of livestock at official and exempt plants in the assigned area.
Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
Essential functions of this position require travel on most workdays to inspect, audit, examine, survey, or investigate clients, customers, or other regulated entities and write reports at those sites or employee's home. Employee reports to the agency's office for occasional meetings or events. Number and timing of work hours may vary daily or weekly to accommodate operational needs and staffing concerns at the client's or customer's worksite, minimize expenditures for repeated visits to complete the work, and allocate resources to complete assigned work effectively.
This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:
You must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:
Must have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE).
At least six (6) months of experience as a meat inspector in a state or federal food safety program; or more than one (1) year of experience in the meat processing industry or the animal agriculture industry.
Must have a valid driver's license.
Thorough knowledge of ante-mortem/postmortem inspection techniques.
Advanced knowledge of food borne disease epidemiology and controls.
Advanced knowledge of requirements and procedures for humane livestock handling and slaughtering.
Thorough knowledge of the requirements and procedures associated with the Performance Based Inspection System.
Advanced knowledge of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), Sanitation Standard Operating Procedure (SSOP), Public Health Information System (PHIS) and the regulatory oversight of these plans.
Thorough knowledge of meat and poultry product standards and labeling requirements.
Working knowledge of Good Production Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
Advanced knowledge of normal and common variations of behavior, physiology, and anatomy of animals.
Working knowledge of meat and poultry product names and production processes.
Effectively communicate skills.
Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
