The Data Engineer supports data platforms, data objects, data pipelines, and automated data integration in support of business application and data analysis needs. In addition, the Data Engineer optimizes systems for data collection, storage, access, and analytics at scale and creates data pipelines that convert raw data into usable formats and source data into aggregated or derived analytical data. The Data Engineer is primarily responsible for making data available, accessible, and secure to stakeholders.
The Data Engineer closely interacts with the Performance Management team's Product Manager and Director, other teammates and internal staff to understand business and technical requirements. The Data Engineer stays aware of technological changes to underlying software tools and platforms and the opportunities and risks that they may pose and works to leverage or mitigate those changes.
The Data Engineer has deep knowledge of database design (relational and object) and knows multiple programming or scripting languages. The Data Engineer must possess effective communication skills to both understand business needs and concisely and accurately convey solutions. This position also requires strong skills in problem solving and data manipulation through software programming.
The Data Engineer ensures solution quality by performing unit testing and collaborating with data analysts, end users, and stakeholders throughout the solution lifecycle. The Data Engineer also provides operational support to implement data pipelines, data services, data feeds, and other automated data integrations, including rapid response, troubleshooting, and resolution to production issues.
The Data Engineer should be a self-motivated individual possessing excellent critical-thinking, written and verbal communication, and data platform design skills.
Gather, refine, and validate data solution (data platform, data pipeline, data object, and data integration) needs and requirements.
Translate requirements into documented data solution designs and specifications.
Conduct proof-of-concept, proto@type, and pilot initiatives.
Identify, model, and communicate solution costs, benefits, risks, and opportunities to management and relevant stakeholders.
Work closely with data analysts and scientists to design and model data objects, data mapping, data transformation, and data quality rules.
Work closely with technical leads and software application programmers to ensure that data objects and data services align with overall application solutions.
Implement data solutions, inclusive of quality and performance (unit) testing.
Monitor the health, security, availability, performance, and scalability of in-scope production data solutions and resolve issues rapidly according to criticality.
Communicate issues, progress, and resolutions to management and impacted stakeholders in a timely and effective manner.
Understand the growth (storage, usage) and changing nature of usage for in-scope data solutions and proactively design for this growth and change.
Interface effectively with support staff to ensure interoperability of data solutions with underlying technology infrastructure, both tactically and strategically.
Develop support and process guides and training materials and train/mentor other data solution support staff.
Develop and communicate realistic solution delivery timelines with identified dependencies and risks and proactively communicate progress.
Individually meet assigned deadlines and proactively communicate work that will not be completed on time with expected quality.
Follow company and department policies, processes, and procedures.
Undertake other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Qualifications:
A bachelor of arts or science degree, equivalent or higher in business analysis, data analysis/engineering, systems analysis and design, IT product design and marketing, or a related discipline is required. A combination of relevant experience and/or relevant certifications may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
The successful candidate will have the following:
Eight-plus years of related experience with data solutions and platforms.
Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills and ability.
Strong ability to work independently and show initiative.
Strong data manipulation, pipeline, and integration software programming and/or scripting skills in areas such as Python, ETL, APIs, SQL, SOQL, Apache Airflow, Bash, Logstash, or equivalent.
Significant experience successfully processing major data format @types, structures, and access methods, such as csv, Excel, JSON, RDBMS, hashes, arrays, structured and unstructured, APIs, data/web services, and query languages.
Deep understanding of relational database features and file servers from a data load, security, compression/storage, and data query performance perspective, including PostGres.
Practical knowledge of pervasive operating systems (Windows, Linux) and how memory, storage, and host/virtual machine infrastructure interoperate with data applications.
Strong ability to collaborate with staff and management and be open to feedback, criticism, and alternative thoughts.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong adaptability and capacity to work in fast-paced environments.
Strong marketing and cost/benefit analysis skills.
Solid time-management skills.
Meticulous documentation and organizational skills and attention to detail.
Not required, but may differentiate a candidate: hands-on experience with Elastic (ELK) or Microsoft Fabric.
