What's the Role
We are seeking an experienced Product and Licensing Counsel to join our Legal & Compliance Department.
As Product Counsel, you would support the development, launch, and governance of our global data and technology products. You'll partner with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and business leaders across the Company to ensure our products are developed in compliance with applicable laws and reflect the Company's standards for innovation and integrity. You will provide practical, business-oriented legal advice throughout the entire product lifecycle - from concept through commercialization - with a focus on product strategy, data use, privacy, AI, intellectual property, and regulatory considerations.
As Licensing Counsel, you would work closely with our business, product and sales partners to draft and negotiate the legal terms and conditions of our licenses for our data and technology services worldwide. Our colleagues depend on us for our deep product and commercial contract knowledge in order to support them in closing the deal. You will provide guidance to meet the Company's strategic sales and revenue targets while protecting our business from undue legal risk. You will also oversee the work of Negotiations team members who are the first point of escalation for handling customer inquiries about the Company's contracts.
We'll trust you to:
Advise Product, Engineering, and Finance teams throughout the product development lifecycle on product design and strategy, data use, and commercialization
Identify and assess legal risks as products evolve - including in connection with advancing technology such as generative and agentic AI - and provide practical, business-oriented solutions
Partner with colleagues in Legal, Compliance and Risk to advise on privacy, data security, intellectual property, and regulatory issues
Draft and review product-related terms of service, user agreements, disclosures, and policies, and advise on marketing materials and client-facing communications
Collaborate with Compliance and Risk to develop scalable tools and frameworks to help product teams manage legal risk efficiently
Monitor emerging laws and regulations impacting Bloomberg's technology, AI, data, and financial products
Negotiate customer and vendor agreements for a wide range of licenses and services
Advise Product and Business on challenging and complex licensing transactions
Oversee the work of and provide training and mentorship to Negotiations team members
You'll need to have:
JD degree and active membership in the New York bar
5-7 years of relevant experience, including at least 3 years in-house at a technology, fintech, or data-driven company (or advising such clients at a top law firm)
Strong understanding of product development lifecycles, especially for data/analytics or AI-driven products
Strong, meticulous drafting skills, with attention to detail, and strong negotiations skills
Working knowledge of intellectual property, commercial contracts, and regulatory frameworks relevant to financial markets
Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and deliver clear, actionable guidance
Practical, solution-oriented mindset with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
We'd Love to See:
Experience advising in the financial or technology sectors, with a solid understanding of core concepts thereof
Proven ability to deliver clear, commercially focused legal advice under pressure
Strong skill in translating legal and regulatory concepts for business, product, and technology audiences
Ability to identify and use technology and data to improve efficiency and knowledge sharing
