Northrop Grumman is seeking Software/Digital Technology (SW/DT) candidates for an internship opportunity. Internship assignments are available with both the Software and Digital Technology teams. This position will be located at our Mission Systems Sector in Rolling Meadows, IL.
The qualified candidate will become part of Northrop Grumman's Targeting, & Survivability (T&S) Division.
As a Software Intern, y ou'll have an opportunity to:
Gain hands-on exposure to the programmable logic full life cycle: design, simulation, implementation, verification, and system integration
Implement and debug designs in simulations and on real hardware
Collaborate directly with experienced engineers to solve design challenges, get feedback, and learn best practices
Collaborate with equipment designers and hardware engineers, shaping the blueprint of electronic data processing systems for both products and commercial software.
As a Digital Technology Intern, y ou'll have an opportunity to:
Bring ideas into reality by designing and developing digital logic for our advanced mission solutions
Design and develop operating systems
Design and develop utility programs to help maintain, optimize, and manage a computer system
Analyze system capabilities to identify areas of improvement or determine computer needs to ensure program completion
Basic Qualifications
A candidate must meet ALL of the below criteria. The candidate must:
Be a student who is enrolled full-time and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college/university and will be enrolled full time in Fall 2026
Be majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering or closely related Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) degree
Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during summer 2026.
A final DoD Secret clearance is required to start (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)
Be able to obtain and maintain Program Special access within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)
Preferred Qualifications:
Have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.0 or higher
A current/active DoD Secret clearance
As a Software Intern, i t will be helpful, though not required , for your course work to have included:
Structured Programming (C), and/or
Object Oriented Programming (C++, Java)and/or
Software architecture (design patterns, multithreaded programming, objected oriented design), and/or
Operating system concepts for embedded systems, and/or
Software development methodologies or frameworks (Waterfall Methodology or Agile), and/or
Version control (Git, GitLab', Visual Studio, GitHub, or Bitbucket, etc.), and/or
Agile software planning tools (Jira or Rally, etc.)
As a Digital Technology Intern, it will be helpful, though not required , for your course work to have included:
Digital design exposure, with experience in VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog
Digital logic basics (combinatorial vs sequential logic, truth tables, finite state machines), digital building blocks (gates, flip flops, latches, timers, etc.) basics of setup / hold times, clock domains
VHDL or Verilog syntax, writing basic modules and test benches
Familiarity with vendor tools (Vivado, Quartus, etc.) and exposure to FPGA development workflow: coding, through synthesis and implementation on device
Some experience with scripting and high-level programming (MATLAB, Python, C/C++)
Intern Pay Range:
Bachelor's: $19.75 to $36.25 per hour
Master's: $35.50 to $44.75 per hour
At Northrop Grumman, our internship pay rates are standardized and take into account three main factors: the anticipated graduation date of the individual, the cost of labor of the geographic location, and whether the internship is considered technical or administrative.

Primary Level Salary Range: $1.00 - $1.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
