We know real Hoosier horsepower! It is the mission of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission to oversee pari-mutuel horse racing in Indiana, and to protect the integrity of the sport through active and diligent regulation.
Role Overview :
Oversee commission equine testing procedures, and monitors compliance and enforcement of commission regulations. Provides and performs veterinary fieldwork at all Indiana regulated horse racing tracks when needed. Monitors emerging equine health problems, national regulations and special directives, which would include working and/or coordinating with other state and federal agencies. Establish, enforce and monitor protocols for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission's equine testing programs.
Salary Statement :
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $109,304.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Oversees Commission Test Barns, Blood Gas Laboratories, and Salix Programs operations.
Sample duties include staffing, scheduling, inventory, and supplies, drawing blood, and preparation of samples for delivery to an approved testing laboratory.
Review and evaluate specimen operations and established policies and procedures to ensure uniform interpretation and accurate application of commission regulations, instructions, standards, and specifications.
Supervise the handling of all laboratory specimens to prevent tampering, confusion, and or contamination.
Keep proper records of test barn activity and sample specimens to ensure chain of custody integrity.
Approve veterinarians that have applied to be licensed by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission (IHRC) to practice on the race track.
Have authority and jurisdiction over the race track veterinarian(s) and the practicing licensed veterinarians within the race track enclosure.
Recommendation to Stewards and Judges whether or not a horse is deemed safe/unsafe or inhumane to race.
Provide reports to the IHRC of the name(s) of a horse(s) that are humanely destroyed or that expire at the race meet and the reason therefore.
Determine if an autopsy is necessary for the expired horse.
Maintain a list of horses that are approved to compete in a race.
Hold pre and post-meetings with IHRC security and investigators;

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
What You'll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:
Possession of and maintain a valid Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine license and federal accreditation by the USDA to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Indiana.
Broad knowledge of basic laboratory techniques and equipment.
Extensive hands-on experience with large animals, preferably horses, is desired.
Extensive experience in performing equine endoscopic examinations.
Ability to apply analytical skills to complete investigations and research projects.
Possession of management and administrative skills and the ability to supervise staff.
Ability to establish and maintain accurate records for the IHRC.
Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of and or the ability to learn the agency computer system.
Ability to develop agency reports, forms, and reporting functions to monitor and track information.
Participate in a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education yearly.
Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
