Role Overview:
As the Assistant Pavement Asset Engineer for Seymour District, you will work with the district Pavement Asset Engineer and Central Office Pavement Asset Management Team to assess the pavement network throughout Seymour District and determine project scope, timing, and costs within the @context of the statewide 20 year pavement asset management plan. You will also work with the district Pavement Asset Engineer and Highway Maintenance Engineer to assess roadway treatments and calculate quantities to recommend for inclusion in upcoming maintenance work plans. You will work with the District Asset Team to provide quality control and material estimates for chip seal operations in Seymour District. You will work with other INDOT departments to ensure that the 20 year plan goals are met by providing technical recommendations during all project development phases, construction, and maintenance activities. A professional engineering license is not required for this position. If you do not currently have your professional engineering license you will be hired at a lower classification and will then be eligible for promotional increases upon achieving milestones including passing the EIT exam, years of experience, and obtaining your professional engineering license.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $75,010.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Provides technical expertise, analysis and recommendations to other INDOT departments for pavement problems
Performs engineering calculations (i.e. estimating oil and stone application rates for chip seal, estimating paving project materials for cost estimates)
Writes reports and correspondence documenting engineering decisions and recommendations
Analyzes and prepares correspondence concerning pavement matters received from consultants, outside agencies, Federal Highway Administration, other INDOT departments and districts, and the general public
Reviews consultant plans, cost estimates, and calculations for conformance with the Department's design criteria, policies, and specifications;
Performs related duties as assigned.
What You'll Need for Success:
This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:
Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (civil engineering is preferred but not required) from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school.
Registered Professional Engineers license in Indiana required; exception may be made for individuals with a bachelor's degree in engineering or a bachelor's degree in engineering and an Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification/Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certification working towards becoming a licensed Professional Engineer in Indiana in a lower-level classification.
At least four(4) years of experience in engineering (civil engineering is preferred), transportation research or related area.
Must have valid Driver's License.
Extensive knowledge of and ability to apply civil engineering theories, principles, methods, and procedures to the engineering specialty.
Broad knowledge of planning, design, or construction of highway or transportation project features (such as roads, bridges, pavement, or traffic structures) in accordance with engineering design and construction standards, principles and methods.?
Extensive knowledge of and ability to apply federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and procedures governing incumbents filed of specialization.
Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply computer aided design and drafting functions to field of specialization.
Ability to prepare and review complex design plans and reports relating to the functional area of specialization.
Ability to perform the algebraic, trigonometric, and higher mathematical computations applied to design operations.
Extensive knowledge of and ability to apply the provisions of American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Design Specifications, AASHTO Standard Specifications and Tests, ASTM Standards.
Working knowledge of Indiana Design Manual (IDM), Indiana Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (IMUTCD), INDOT standard specifications and standard drawings.?
Knowledge of department systems not limited to Scheduling Project Management System (SPMS), Deighton Transportation Information Management System (dTIMS), ArcGIS, and Work Management System (WMS).
Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
May need additional requirements depending on the assigned specialty:
Bridge: Ability to use bridge design software such as CONSPAN, RC-Pier, GEOMATH, and Merlin Dash. Required to complete every 10 years, National Highway Institute course "Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges", "Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges", "Bridge Inspection Refresher Training ". Attend INDOT Bridge Inspection training classes, Annual Local Transportation Assistance Program (LTAP) County Bridge Conference at Purdue and Annual State Border bridge inspections - if in their District every year.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
