What You'll get to Do:
Be part of Northrop Grumman's dynamic Mechanical Engineering team in Rolling Meadows, IL. This team is responsible for the maintenance and design of contracted hardware sub-systems used in the support of airborne electronic systems and ground test systems to protect the war fighter. These sub-systems consist of legacy, state-of-the-art custom designed, and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware enclosed in racks, chassis, and circuit cards. The group also provides an opportunity to support and design ground mobile test and pilot training equipment used to verify operations, train USAF maintenance personnel and electronic warfare officers.
The Engineer Design will support design modeling and drawing efforts utilizing SolidWorks. AutoCAD may be used less frequently. Support fabrication through initial programming, set up and operate CNC machining center and 3D printing. In particular, the designer will be responsible for creating models, 2D drawings, checking hardware drawings and related documents for soundness, efficiency, and simplicity in design; completeness, clarity, and dimensional accuracy; conformity to design/drafting standards, design specifications, and practicability; and economy of fabrication, assembly, and installation. The Designer will create or update layout drawings, fabrication drawings and engineering change orders, support Mechanical Engineers design reviews. Other tasks will include manufacturing engineering liaison support, working with suppliers, hardware testing, and supporting Integration and Test (I&T) operations.
This position can be filled at either Associate Design Engineer or Design Engineer Level
Basic Qualifications
For an Associate Design Engineer: A Bachelors degree in Engineering related discipline or continuing education with 0-2 years of experience in Engineering documentation, CAD design and CNC shop operations. A high school diploma/GED and 4-6 additional years of related experience is accepted in lieu of Bachelor's Degree.
For a Design Engineer (Level 2): A Bachelor's degree in Engineering related discipline or continuing education with 2-4 years of experience in Engineering documentation, CAD design and CNC shop operations. A high school diploma/GED and 6-8 additional years of related experience is accepted in lieu of Associates Degree.
Working knowledge and aptitude of electro-mechanical / mechanical systems and hardware.
Experience with 3D CAD modeling tools
Ability to collaborate in a team environment.
Ability for infrequent travel (
U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) secret clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
Working knowledge of CNC programing languages (HAAS)
An Associates degree or higher in Engineering related discipline
Experience with 3D CAD modeling tools (SolidWorks)
Experience in a Department of Defense (DoD) environment
Experience with hardware and software configuration management

Primary Level Salary Range: $64,200.00 - $96,400.00
Secondary Level Salary Range: $77,600.00 - $116,400.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
