The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for a Data Scientist for the Department of Research in Miami, Florida.The Data Scientist 3 is a subject matter expert at using large data sets to find opportunities for product and process optimization, using models to test the effectiveness of different courses of action. In addition, uses a variety of data mining and analysis methods, using a range of data tools, building and implementing models, using and creating algorithms and creating and running simulations. Moreover, the Data Scientist 3 provides recommendations to drive business results with data-based insights, and influences a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams.CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Collaborates with stakeholders throughout the organization to identify opportunities for leveraging company data to drive business solutions.
Leads the development of a state-of-the-art data portal for the storage, management and analysis of multidimensional and diverse datasets.
Leads the development of pipelines and workflows for the integration of publicly available datasets with the developed infrastructure
Performs active project management to develop the Data Portal and other tools, coordinating the timely implementation of user requirements, technical specifications and user feedback
Leverages state-of-the-art big data and AI approaches and develops computational algorithms and workflows for the identification of novel targets and appropriate prioritization
Mines and analyzes data from company databases to drive optimization and improvement of product development, marketing techniques and business strategies.
Leads the assessment of effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques.
Develops custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets.
Uses predictive modeling to increase and optimize customer experiences, operational efficiencies, and other business outcomes.
Leads different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes.
Develops processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Development and optimization of AI models for diagnosis: Lead the development, training, and deployment of advanced deep learning models for ocular disease diagnosis, improving accuracy and accessibility of clinical tools.Big data integration and processing: Coordinate the management, curation, and analysis of large-scale multimodal datasets (Optical Coherence Tomography/OCT, fundus, slit lamp), ensuring data quality and readiness for machine learning pipelines.Applied image enhancement for clinical utility: Implement and supervise advanced image processing and quality enhancement workflows to maximize diagnostic reliability and algorithm performance.Collaboration and team leadership: Coordinate cross-functional teams of fellows, researchers, healthcare professionals, and data scientists integrating artificial intelligence solutions into clinical and research settings while mentoring junior scientists.Innovation in computational methods: Apply and adapt big-data analysis techniques, large language models, and specialized machine learning models to identify novel diagnostic opportunities and improve workflow efficiency.
