The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a Sr. Data Scientist to support our government customer located at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Kapili maintains a repository of over 20,000 films, 2,000,000 photographs, and 60,000,000 pages of documents dating back to The Manhattan Project. Kapili Services will make repository digitally accessible to DTRA deterrent mission researchers in a way that provides knowledge and meaning using Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and data science to return relevant search results to user queries.
The Data Scientist will collaborate with a team of software developers, system users (researchers), system administrators, and librarians to develop and deploy AI-powered data-driven models that enhance search and discovery capabilities within the DTRIAC Collection. Leverage advanced analytics, data science, and AI/ML capabilities to perform targeted analyses, predictive modeling, and data mining, providing dedicated support to missions, end-users, and stakeholders through data-driven insights and recommendations.
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design, develop, and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) enabled methods for navigating, searching, inserting, and extracting information or files from the Data Lake, leveraging natural language processing (NLP), deep learning, and predictive analytics to support government and performer requirements.
Design and implement cutting-edge technologies such as semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), interactive chatbots, and topic visualization techniques. To achieve these goals, the Data Scientist may work with large language models (LLMs) such as GPT, Llama, and Mistral, to support government and performer requirements.
Collaborate with developers, administrators, and data engineers on implementing and refining computer vision, OCR, and information extraction technologies for automated metadata extraction, cataloging, and data enrichment. There is opportunity to work with diverse data @types, including video, images, audio, and seismic data.
Implement, configure, and perform functional testing of applications, utilizing containerization, microservices architecture, and DevOps practices to ensure scalability, reliability, and security.
Develop and refine data models for the repository/Data Lake, incorporating graph-based models, knowledge graphs, and ontologies to support ML/AI algorithms, semantic search, entity recognition, and sentiment analysis, utilizing NLP and computer vision techniques.
Support integration, hosting, and deployment of AI/ML-enabled capabilities and products on government IT systems, ensuring compliance with cybersecurity and data governance.
Participate in Gate Reviews, providing input on AI/ML strategy, data science roadmap, and technical debt management. Create documentation and training materials for Project Products.
Other duties as assigned, including maintaining technical proficiency through ongoing education and professional development, such as staying current with emerging AI/ML trends, researching and analyzing industry publications and research papers, and attending conferences, to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of AI innovation.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
CompTIA Security+ Certification required (Can be obtained on the job with first six weeks)
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Five plus (5+) years relevant experience working on AI/ML/data science products
Understanding of complex workflows
Strong Programming Skills in Python
Experience using PyTorch, TensorFlow, Transformers (HuggingFace) or similar machine learning libraries
Model training and deployment experience in NLP and/or CV (esp. LLMs and ViTs)
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience using revision control software such as git
Experience with DevSecOps, MLOps, and related software (esp. GitLab, MLFlow)
Experience with containerization (esp. Docker, Podman, Kubernetes)
Experience with NoSQL databases and ETL (esp. ElasticSearch and neo4j)
Experience with search and RAG
Clear written and oral communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively on a small full-stack team of data engineers, software engineers, and data scientists developing AIML applications for challenging datasets
REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:
Must be a U.S. Citizen
Must be able to obtain a DoD Top Secret clearance.
