What You Will Do
The Associate Laboratory Directorate for Physical Sciences (ALDPS) is seeking an outstanding, executive-level administrative partner to join our leadership team. ALDPS develops and applies a broad set of scientific and engineering capabilities of national significance in materials science and experimental physics at our world-class research facilities. ALDPS is made up of approximately 1,100 employees who reside in six divisions and two scientific program offices while leading three national user facilities.
Staff Operations Manager 4 ($114,700 - $191,200)
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Staff Operations Manager (SOM) will serve as a member of the ALDPS leadership team and provide high-level business and operational strategic and tactical support for the directorate. The selected candidate will work with ALD and division management and administrative support on business, operational, and programmatic activities, providing direct and candid input and leadership on key issues and initiatives coming into or being generated by the directorate office. The SOM will facilitate and coordinate the planning, oversight, and conduct of directorate-wide activities to support programmatic execution, business operations, and directorate implementation of institutional requirements. The SOM will conduct research and analysis of existing requirements, systems, and processes to ensure and improve consistency, efficiency, and compliance. He/she will routinely interface with all levels of Laboratory staff and management; coordinate, oversee, and execute directorate response to action items from the Deputy Laboratory Director for Science, Technology, & Engineering (DDSTE); and provide guidance to managers and employees on operational and administrative issues. This role will manage support staff within the directorate office and will lead and provide guidance to division SOMs and administrative staff, ensuring high levels of customer service and quality deliverables. The SOM will lead and coordinate logistics for large multi-organizational reviews, conferences, and speaker series. He/she will facilitate and lead implementation of talent management initiatives including developing and supporting the management of staff and succession planning, recruiting activities, and administrative procedures. A level of tact, assurance, and comfort in assuming specific delegated authority to represent management is required. Discretion and confidentiality in responding to internal and external institutional business and personnel matters must be exercised.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Operational Experience
Extensive knowledge/experience in, and consultative experience with, at least four of the following areas: business; human resources; financial management; policy implementation; administrative systems development; operational and programmatic activities related to safety, security, environmental compliance, quality, and performance assurance; strategic and tactical planning; and space planning. Demonstrated success in developing and supporting process improvement and innovative responses to high-level and complex organizational needs.
Institutional Knowledge
Ability to successfully navigate and execute responsibilities within a national laboratory or similar institution's organizational structure, policies, procedures, requirements, and various business systems. Expert-level ability to execute duties in alignment with business, operational, and programmatic missions, goals, commitments, and critical issues.
Collaboration
Proven leadership skills and a record of accomplishment successfully building collaborations and facilitating teamwork across organizational lines, including networking with key contacts outside of area of professional expertise.
Leadership
Expert-level organizational skills and a proven ability to independently establish priorities while working effectively under pressure. Ability to work with various stakeholders to gain consensus on business operations challenges and initiatives to identify, implement, and achieve initiatives.
Management
Experience supervising, guiding, mentoring, and growing administrative and operational personnel. Demonstrated successful experience leading diverse teams to success.
Communication
Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills with all levels of management and personnel, including negotiating, influencing, conflict resolution, consensus building, oral presentation, and written communications. Demonstrated ability to create preliminary drafts of directorate presentations and procedures while integrating input from a variety of sources.
Education/Experience: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree and 8 years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications:
Clear understanding of operational boundaries, roles, responsibilities, and rigor to maintain the directorate's positive customer service model.
Experience successfully implementing continuous improvement, process improvement, and strategic planning initiatives.
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of project management demonstrated through implementation of a project in one or more of the specific LANL business disciplines (i.e., procurement, informational technology, human resources, materials management and warehousing, and finance).
Comprehensive knowledge of the Laboratory's organizational structure, policies, procedures, requirements, and various business systems. Expert-level knowledge of Laboratory business, operational, and programmatic missions, goals, commitments, and critical issues.
Active Q clearance
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is a 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program : Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
