Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Position Summary
An Archaeological Field Director position is being advertised with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ) to provide technical expertise, compliance monitoring, and field oversight of contract archaeologists and tribal cultural specialists conducting fieldwork on behalf of the Air Force's Sentinel project in the F. E. Warren (CO, NE, WY), Malmstrom (MT), and Minot (ND) Missile Fields, Hill Air Force Base (UT), and at launch facilities on Vandenberg Space Force Base (CA). Relocation expenses are available; conditions apply.
The Archaeological Field Director will oversee field operations for all phases of archaeological investigations. Extensive previous experience leading and conducting NRHP eligibility assessments, and small and large-scale data-recovery mitigation work is required. As a member of the CEMML Sentinel Cultural Resources program, adherence to the executed Programmatic Agreement is critical. In addition, an excellent understanding of the technical requirements and theoretical foundations that guide the discipline is expected of the candidate. The candidate must be familiar with and comfortable conducting activities such as walking, excavating, screening, and driving in areas with rough terrain and where inclement weather conditions may occur.
The candidate should be prepared to provide technical expertise, compliance monitoring, and field oversight of contract archaeologists and tribal cultural specialists conducting fieldwork on behalf of the Air Force's Sentinel project in the Malmstrom (MT) Missile Field. Duty-station for this position is Malmstrom Air Force Base in Cascade County, Montana, adjacent to the city of Great Falls, but hybrid/telework is authorized. This position is expected to provide in-person on-site support between April and October when field crews are deployed throughout the Missile Field. Frequent travel of at least 50% is expected April-October. 100% Remote/Telework continues November-March. The Archaeological Field Director will remotely integrate with our existing team of GIS , Natural Resources, and Cultural Resources Specialists located at our headquarters in Colorado.
This will be a full time (40 hours/week) position, depending on continued funding.
Required Job Qualifications
Master's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field.
Minimum of 2-years of post-graduate professional archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology.
Previous experience supervising and/or leading NRHP eligibility assessments and data-recovery mitigation.
Demonstrate experience working with a wide range of information, organizing details, and meeting deadlines.
Demonstrate experience supervising/conducting activities in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act ( NHPA )
Prior experience working with Traditional Cultural Specialists and/or Tribal Monitors.
Have a thorough understanding of most standard computer programs.
Experience communicating technical information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license by the employment start date.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Job Qualifications
Greater than 2-years of relevant post-graduate professional archaeological work experience.
Registered Professional Archaeologist ( RPA )
The most highly qualified candidates will possess knowledge and experience in Intermountain and Great Plains archaeology.
Prior experience supervising/overseeing NRHP eligibility assessments and data-recovery mitigation projects with minimal supervision.
Knowledge of U.S. Air Force policies and processes related to cultural resources management is highly desirable.
Experience working in highly structured organizations such as governmental agencies or the military with clearly established lines of authority, procedures, and protocols is preferred.
Previous participation in complex projects that occur in multiple states and involve private, federal, state, and tribal lands is highly desirable.
Experience working with features of the built environment, including landscapes, structures and buildings a plus
Experience working with and/or developing SharePoint systems.
Working knowledge of ArcGIS, ArcPro, and ESRI suite of products a plus.
Previous work on projects at Hill Air Force Base, UT; Malmstrom Air Force Base, MT; Minot Air Force Base, ND, or F.E. Warren Air Force Base, WY; or prior experience supporting the Sentinel or Minuteman III programs.
