POSITION SUMMARY:
Marathon Petroleum Corporation's (MPC's) Galveston Bay Refinery currently has a vacancy for an Instrument and Electrical Project Engineer in the Major Projects Group This challenging assignment is an excellent opportunity to gain experience on mid-size and large projects.
The Instrument and Electrical (I&E) Project Engineer will be responsible for providing technical support to mid- and large-size refinery projects from early conceptual engineering through detailed design, construction, and project completion. The Engineer will report to the Major Projects Engineering Manager and have responsibility for coordinating and providing I&E support to overall project needs and scope. Projects are typically multi-discipline and will vary in size. Typical projects will have a total installed cost greater than $50,000,000 and will include both capital and expense scope needed to properly maintain and optimize existing operating units.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, team-oriented individual that has experience with the project life cycle and refinery or petrochemical applications that include process measurement and control, electrical equipment, field instrumentation, safety instrumented system (SIS) design, electrical area classification, management of change (MOC) processes, and industry standards (NFPA, ISA, IEEE, NEMA, API, etc.). The position requires the ability to interface with project teams and all departments at the Galveston Bay Refinery. The Engineer may be expected to travel up to 25% to an EPC contractor office or vendor shop during engineering.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead instrument and electrical efforts for multiple assigned projects in a timely, safe, and cost-effective manner.
Ensure assigned projects comply with all applicable company and electrical industry standards and recommendations throughout all phases of the project, e.g. NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA, API, NEMA, etc. Periodically review and provide recommended improvement to corporate instrument / electrical specifications based on industry and site-specific experience.
Interface with engineering contractors, refining personnel, E&I vendors, construction contractors, and engineers through all project phases.
Participate in project meetings.
Provide input to scope and design of assigned projects; Identify front-end engineering & design (FEED) and Implementation deliverables necessary for the I&E scope of the project.
Provide timely feedback on FEED deliverables / estimates to achieve I&E-related schedule milestones on assigned projects.
Attend MOC hazard reviews; provide direction on applicable I&E-related action items.
Communicate site preferences and approved manufacturers to engineering contractors on the front-end of each project.
Take ownership of I&E work packages, and work directly with the engineering contractor to oversee progress at regular intervals (e.g. 30%, 60%, 90% progress checks).
Review and approve instrument and electrical equipment spec sheets prior to procurement and support the purchasing of equipment and materials.
Participate in technical reviews with project engineers, engineering firms and equipment suppliers. Review construction work packages to ensure quality deliverables are available for the Construction group.
Attend factory acceptance tests for I&E equipment.
Aid in maintenance and training development for new instrumentation or electrical equipment installed on assigned projects.
Support construction and commissioning of assigned projects.
Capture lessons-learned for future projects; identify root causes and potential improvements for those issues. Communicate lessons-learned during staff meetings.
Support project closeout activities including timely document returns.
Provide mentorship to less experienced I&E engineers.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
Minimum 5 years of post-degree engineering experience in the refining, petrochemical, or manufacturing industries with instrument/electrical systems and applications is required.
Must be authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.
A valid driver's license is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years post-degree experience as a Project Engineer / Project Manager is preferred.
Engineering experience in a refinery setting is preferred.
Experience with ETAP and SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) is preferred.
