Role Overview:
The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) is seeking a dynamic, strategic, and forward-thinking Director of Project Management to lead a team of project managers working on high-priority projects for initiatives that promote innovation and improve student outcomes across the state. This role requires strong leadership skills, project management expertise, and a deep understanding of how to ensure project outcomes connect to the mission of the state agency. This role will also require a steadfast ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving policy and educational landscape.
The Director will provide strategic planning and oversight of agency-wide project management and coaching/mentoring of multiple Senior Project Managers on the team. The ideal candidate will bring strong experience with innovative project management, a strong sense of ingenuity, adaptability, and collaborative leadership to support the department's goals and drive continuous improvement in Indiana's K-12 education system. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Lead cross-functional project teams in executing complex projects, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
Lead, manage, coach, and mentor a team of Senior Project Managers.
Utilize innovative project management methodologies and tools to monitor progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
Establish clear communication channels and reporting mechanisms to inform stakeholders of project status and milestones.
(As applicable) Oversee the integration of IT solutions into strategic projects working closely with the IT department and external vendors as needed.
Evaluate technology options and recommend solutions that align with project requirements and organizational objectives.
Ensure compliance with relevant state and agency policies, standards, and regulations throughout the project lifecycle.
Allocate resources effectively to support project activities, including personnel, budget, and equipment.
Provide guidance and mentorship to project team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
Coordinate with external consultants, contractors, and partners to augment project capabilities and ensure alignment with agency objectives.
Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure project success and impact.
Conduct regular assessments and evaluations to track progress, identify areas for improvement, and drive continuous optimization, particularly focusing on maximizing the impact of state and federal funding for projects.
Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for executive leadership and stakeholders, highlighting achievements, challenges, and recommendations.
Serve as a thought partner to senior leadership, contributing to project management strategic planning, project management policy development, and continuous improvement efforts.
Build and sustain partnerships with internal agency stakeholders as well as local education agencies, education stakeholders, community organizations, and other governmental entities as it relates to the lifecycle of a project.
Monitor project milestones, assess outcomes, and prepare reports, presentations, and communications to internal and external stakeholders.
Act as an internal consultant across IDOE divisions to identify opportunities for cross team collaboration, innovation and improvement in operations, programs, and policy implementation.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $93,002.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Review and evaluate organizational effectiveness, goal determination, and strategic planning, etc., makes recommendations for improvement.
Develop and coordinate plans and policies, resources, and mission as well as goals, vision and expectations of agency or program.
Provide guidance to agencies and the public regarding applicable laws and rules.
Supervise subordinate personnel including hiring, determining workload, and delegating assignments, training, monitoring, and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary action.
Monitor agency or program budget including revenues, expenditures, and budget projections.
Communicate with news and other media. responds to media questions or requests in an appropriate public relations manner.
Coordinate with other government officials on planning issues (i.e. federal and/or state agency directors, etc.).
Coordinate, review and evaluate the use of appropriate controls and standards for the agency.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
