This position serves our partners at the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). The MNIT DEED team provides technical support to help improve employment conditions in Minnesota. The team supports work that improves workforce and community development, increases business recruitment, and helps Minnesota small businesses to expand into international trade.
As a Senior Data Engineer with Minnesota IT Services and the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), you will shape, build, maintain, and support the DEED Amazon Web Services (AWS) Postgres database cluster and data lake infrastructure. You will leverage data lake technologies to support the growing data science needs within the DEED data lake. Using your advanced cloud database and data lake production experience, you will ensure that the production database and data lake environments operate efficiently, securely, and effectively.
By applying project management techniques, you will resolve technical issues, investigate new database and data lake technologies, recommend changes and enhancements, and maximize the technologies' potential to meet DEED's evolving needs. In addition, you will provide leadership, technical and administrative expertise, and business knowledge to ensure production databases, and the data lake are available and performing within prescribed service levels in a 24/7 environment.
Additional job duties include Postgres SQL database administration, performing upgrades and installing patches, and serving as a technical advisor to the application development team on the use of Postgres SQL. You will also support data lake administration and serve as a data engineer for the DEED Paid Leave teams.
Occasional work outside of traditional business hours may be required.
This position requires an employee to be onsite at 180 5th Street E, St. Paul, Minnesota at least 50% of the time, with some opportunity to perform work from a telework location. Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a minimum of four (4) years of advanced data science experience.
Experience must include:
Data lake technologies such as Apache Spark, Delta Lake, and/or Unity Catalog
Production data lake administration, development and maintenance.
Data lake security and Amazon AWS Postgres RDS databases.
Data modeling experience in creating effective models and schemas, and experience creating and supporting ETL/ELT processes
Experience with Python in a data engineering
Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.
Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.
A master's degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor's degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate's degree substitutes for one (1) year.
Preferred Qualifications
Data lake technical decision making with limited resources and precedence.
Sophisticated data lake troubleshooting ability, including the ability to create and test hypotheses based on relative likelihood, and a willingness and ability to creatively consider all possible causes for a problem and test appropriately.
Experience with Databricks
Experience with Infrastructure as Code / Terraform
Proficient in creating and supporting ETL/ELT processes
