The Senior Deputy District Attorney performs professional legal work in the prosecution of criminal cases in the 17thJudicial District, acting on behalf of the District Attorney and representing the People of the State of Colorado. Attorneys in this category have consistently demonstrated the experience and competence necessary to handle first chair/lead prosecutor responsibilities on any @type of case, regardless of complexity. Attorneys have also demonstrated leadership ability and consistency in developing working relationships with law enforcement, the judiciary, the defense bar, victim groups, and the community.
Examples of Duties for Success
Demonstrate a strong commitment to seeking justice, preserving community safety and making the criminal justice system better
Perform the duties of a District Court prosecutor, including preparing and conducting jury trials on high level felony offenses such as homicide cases, sex assault cases etc.
Maintain a large caseload of felony cases and perform all necessary duties to shepherd the cases through the criminal justice system, including making appropriate plea offers, working with victims, preparing witnesses, collaborating with law enforcement and interacting with defense attorneys.
Represent the 17thJudicial District and District Attorney using professionalism and integrity in dealing with court officials, witnesses, members of the legal community and the general public.
Serve as a leader and mentor in the office, particularly with less-experienced attorneys
Establish, nurture and improve relationships between the District Attorney's Office and the community
Demonstrate leadership to improve and strengthen the units and teams within the District Attorney's Office
Serve as a liaison to law enforcement agencies within the 17thJudicial District Attorney
Provide, on a scheduled basis, off-hour and on-call services to police agencies requiring assistance during nights and weekends
Serve on various "on-call" teams within the office, such as Homicide On-Call, Vehicular Homicide On-Call and others as designated
TO BE SUCCESSFUL, OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the duties, powers, limitations and authorities of the District Attorney's Office and related law enforcement or criminal justice agencies
Experience prosecuting felony cases from their inception to jury trial, sentencing and post-conviction litigation
Skill in courtroom presentation
Knowledge of established precedents, case law and sources of legal reference applicable to the activities of assigned specialized area and the District Attorney's Office
Knowledge of criminal law and procedure, rules of evidence, and advanced principles of litigation, trial and hearing procedures
Knowledge of ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional standards and/or federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations
Commitment to working collaboratively in a team environment?
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Ability to work independently and efficiently to meet statutory deadlines
Ability to learn and utilize computer case management software programs
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, court officials, law enforcement and the community?
Qualifications for Success
Must possess a law degree from an accredited law school
Seven (7) years minimum experience as prosecuting attorney in the State of Colorado or another State is required.
Prior felony prosecution experience is required
Must be a licensed attorney permitted to practice law in the State of Colorado.
