POSITION OVERVIEW
Full-time (Doctoral) Lecturer in Social/Cultural Anthropology.
The Anthropology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY invites applications for a full-time (Doctoral) Lecturer in Social/Cultural Anthropology beginning August 2026.
John Jay College has a long-standing reputation for scholarly and public engagement on issues related to social justice. The Anthropology Department is home to two undergraduate majors: (1) Anthropology and (2) Deviance, Crime, and Culture. We seek a colleague whose teaching, research and commitment to service will contribute meaningfully to both majors and complement our department's existing strengths.
We welcome candidates whose work engages contemporary themes such as the anthropology of religion and ritual; environmental justice; migration, and human rights. We are especially interested in applicants whose research addresses intersecting issues such as border regimes, Indigenous and Afro-diasporic epistemologies, political ecologies of extraction and dispossession, climate displacement, and the criminalization of mobility.
We encourage engagement with critical theoretical frameworks including decolonial and abolitionist frameworks, feminist and queer anthropology, Black and Indigenous studies, multispecies ethnography, the anthropology of the Anthropocene, and theories of care, resistance, and resilience. The geographic area is open. The department is committed to expanding its expertise beyond the United States.
The successful candidate will be a pedagogically creative educator whose teaching connects global and local struggles and reflects a commitment to justice oriented, community-engaged, and culturally responsive education.
We are a small, collaborative department with nine (9) full-time faculty, two (2) substitute faculty, and a large adjunct community. Candidates who demonstrate teaching excellence and experience working in intellectually and demographically diverse environments are encouraged to apply. The position includes teaching and mentoring undergraduate students, participating in departmental initiatives, and contributing to college and university service. The successful candidate will have the ability to maintain a robust research and publication program, to deliver research training to students, and to educate for justice, a core mission of John Jay College.
The successful candidate must be eager and qualified to work with our diverse student body. As demonstrated in John Jay College's Seven Principles for a Culturally Responsive, Inclusive, and Anti-Racist Curriculum (https://new.jjay.cuny.edu/sites/default/files/2023-08/7\Princip\Cultur\Resp\Incl\AntiRacist\Curric\Adopt\4.8.21-brief.pdf), the College seeks a faculty member who thrives in a multicultural, collaborative academic environment and is committed to both access and excellence in higher education.
