Summary You will serve as a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT REPAIRER in the CRANE MAINTENANCE DIVISION OF THE LIFTING AND HANDLING DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD. Responsibilities You will disassemble, repair, and assemble machinery and equipment components such as hoist, travel, swing, and boom assemblies. You will remove, install, and align travel, hoist, brake, and drive motors; gasoline and diesel engines. You will repair gasoline and diesel engines. You will perform machining operations associated with repairs such as reboring, cylinders, bearings, bushings, turning or grinding shafts, pistons, brake drums, wheels, and manufacture of replacement parts. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION, such as: Diagnosing failures, making minor repairs, adjustments, and major repairs to a large variety of heavy-duty transportation equipment of many @types. Mechanically and physically adapting or altering items to fit and mesh into systems and vehicles for which the items are not specifically designed. Utilizing blueprints, sketches, and specifications. Determining when parts should be cleaned, adjusted, or replaced with standard parts. - Using basic tools such as wrenches, sockets, torque wrenches, brake tools, and screwdrivers. Removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories.
