Responsibilities Install, modify, connect, inspect, troubleshoot and repair overhead and underground primary electrical distribution lines, service lines, substations, transformers, insulators, lightning arresters, switches, fuses, and other similar equipment. Troubleshoot cable systems to locate shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, electrolysis damage, capacitance imbalance or cable breaks using common electrical test devices such as voltmeter, ohmmeter, and megger. Repair and maintain Fiber Optic cable, antennas and wireless systems. Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain substations and generating power plants. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications About the Position: This position installs, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs overhead and underground electrical distribution and service lines, transformers, substations and similar equipment. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) High Voltage Electrician ~ without more than normal supervision.Must possess the ability to perform common duties which include installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical power control equipment, distribution lines, or electric generating equipment. I can erect and replace poles, install underground cable, conduit, and ductwork. I can diagnose problems and determine corrective actions for electrical systems or electrical equipment. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Efforts: Moderately heavy physical effort is exerted in climbing a pole, working aloft on pole, at ground level, and in ground trenches or manholes. Moderately heavy lifting, pulling, and carrying of equipment and material weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifting or pulling heavy cables and equipment weighing more than 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers using block and tackle, pulleys, or other lifting devices. Position requires incumbent to crouch, stand, kneel, and stoop while installing, repairing or testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as enclosed switch gear or in structures such as overhead bus and conduit assemblies. Work above ground from aerial bucket trucks and poles, at ground level, and in trenches or manholes. Work requires bending, stooping, climbing and standing for long periods while installing, repairing and testing electrical equipment in manholes and on overhead distribution lines. Work Conditions: Works indoors and outdoors while being exposed to danger from explosions of equipment and cables in manholes and vault, as well as danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, broken bones, cuts and bruises. Incumbent is exposed to heat and noise when working in substations or power-generating facilities, to extremes of weather when working outdoors, and to unpleasant odors and wet slippery surfaces when working in manholes. Subject to electrical burns while working around high voltage electrical lines, broken bones from falls from poles, and strains from awkward work positions. Incumbent is exposed to chemicals such as insulation oil from transformers and oil switches. Must use protective devices such as earplugs, safety hats, and nonconductive gloves and footwear.
